Replacement Dasboard Vin Tag

Hi,

 

would anyone know where I can get a replacement dashboard vin tag? The PO sent out the dash to get recovered and I can't find the tag anywhere in the dozens of boxes. I have the other tags.

That could be a little touchy as it's a legal vehicle identifier linked to the title. Hopefully someone has gone through the process and can give you some pointers. Good luck!

Spoke to Mike over at Banzai, he has looked into reproducing them but the initial cost is too high. Maybe a group buy would help out?

I'm in the same boat with my 260Z race car.  I bought it with no title.  The PO said that the original owner moved from Texas to Indiana and took the Z with them.  From what I can tell, mechanically it must have been pretty well used up, but it was pretty well rust-free so they kept the car.  They never bothered to switch the title from TX to IN and the Z sat parked for a decade.  They eventually sold it as a parts/race car to another Indiana guy who again never bothered to deal with the title since he planned to race it someday.  He parked it in his barn where it sat for another 5-10 years.  That's when I found it on CL and bought it for $450 to build into a race car. I always wanted to title it so I could at least drive it up and down the road for testing, but my teammate threw the old, worthless dash in the trash when we installed the cage.  By the time I knew what he did, it was too late and the VIN tag was gone.  Now, unless I find a replacement VIN tag, getting a replacement title will be even harder than before the tag was thrown away.  I've had the car 5 years now and would still like to title it.

That sucks. Luckily I have a title. Strangely though, there is a Arizona control number on my door jamb on it and also my vin number is on this Arizona tag.

The VIN is on the firewall.  Don't worry about the dash tag so much.  You should be able to get a title with the firewall VIN - I would think.

Any good metal fab shop can make you one. It is not a crime since you are not attempting to change the actual vehicle number which is found on the dash (removable), on the door jamb (removable), the passenger side fender engine bay (removable) and drum-roll on the firewall just near the brake booster (not removable).

Don't waste more time on this.

Metal shops could make them but the font wouldn't match. Not sure if you would really care... A mismatched font is better than no tag at all, right?

 

Here in Pennsylvania, you need a pencil tracing of the VIN number when you apply for a PA title for a vehicle formerly from another state. The most common location to obtain that tracing is from the dashboard VIN plate although you can use other locations if they work. And if you can't get a legible tracing anywhere, you can have the vehicle visually inspected by a certified PA State Inspection Mechanic to verify the VIN instead of using a tracing.

Actually, if you take the car with you when doing the title transfer someone (a notary) can come out and look at the vin. I recently did that with my Datsun truck. BTW, there's no dash VIN on the truck from the factory.

True that. What I should have said was that you can have the vehicle inspected by someone authorized to verify the VIN visually (which includes, but is not limited to inspection mechanics).

 

From PennDOT:

 

"If you are unable to locate your vehicle’s VIN plate or you are unable to secure a legible tracing of the plate, contact a certified inspection mechanic or notary public employed by a motor vehicle dealer or issuing agent. These individuals are authorized to inspect and visually verify the VIN when a tracing of the plate is not possible."

I pretty much wanted it because it annoyed me that I didn't have it. Paperwork wise I should be good*knock on wood*.
