Blue_streak Posted February 4, 2015 Share #1 Posted February 4, 2015 I got a 280zx matchbox style ignition module, my question is when wiring it in can I put it in the stock location using the red wire green wire and black ground wire that go to the stock unit? Is there a wire diagram available for this, I haven't been able to find much info. ThanksSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
siteunseen Posted February 4, 2015 Share #2 Posted February 4, 2015 Here's one for a '77, http://atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/distributor/index.html
SteveJ Posted February 4, 2015 Share #3 Posted February 4, 2015 If I can remember, I'll look at my 73. It's actually pretty easy to wire in.
Blue_streak Posted February 4, 2015 Author Share #4 Posted February 4, 2015 I don't have the dizzy though, just the matchbox. I figure it must be essentially the same process just wanna make sure before I dive in.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
SteveJ Posted February 4, 2015 Share #5 Posted February 4, 2015 What year car do you have? Edit: I don't know why I didn't see the title of the thread clearly. Okay, disconnect the TIU.The male terminals on the ignition module get connected to the positive wire coming to the ballast and negative on the coil.As the write-up on AtlanticZ says, Terminal C gets positive.http://atlanticz.ca/zclub/techtips/distributor/9.pg_small.jpgThen find the green and red wires coming from the 76 distributor and connect to the green and red wires from the ignition module.Secure the module, and try it out. If you don't have red and green wires attached to the module, let me know. I know I have a spare module hanging around the garage somewhere that I could use to guide you further. Zed Head Posted February 5, 2015 Share #6 Posted February 5, 2015 Here's a 76 wiring diagram - http://www.classiczcars.com/topic/33820-free-full-color-wiring-diagram-for-1976-280z/ Here's a link to a picture of the module connection - You might have to guess on red and green, it looks like the wires are attached to the distributor. If you get it backward the engine will still run but the timing will jump around. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/BWD0/CBE503/02801.oap?year=1981&make=Nissan&model=280ZX&vi=1209349&ck=Search_ignition+module_02801_1209349_-1&keyword=ignition+module&pt=02801&ppt=C0334

SteveJ Posted February 5, 2015 Share #8 Posted February 5, 2015 Thank you. This is how it's wired for the ZX distributor in my 73.
Zed Head Posted February 5, 2015 Share #9 Posted February 5, 2015 The wire diagram link is dead.Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkIt's not dead, it just links to the originators web page. Looks like he moved some things. It used to be there. Regardless, everybody knows that wiring diagrams are in the FSM. The wires at the ignition module are red and green though. Stick your head under the passenger dash and look. With Steve J's post you have everything you need. Don't forget to make good contact between the metal back of the E12-80 module and ground. That's where the current through the coil ends up.
Blue_streak Posted February 5, 2015 Author Share #10 Posted February 5, 2015 Ok I guess I'll give it a shot, I'll report back.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Zed Head Posted February 5, 2015 Share #11 Posted February 5, 2015 You never really said why you want to do this. Are you missing the stock unit or do you think it's not working right? Here's the link from EuroDat's work with the GM HEI module. Same idea, 4 connections and ground the metal base. http://www.classiczcars.com/topic/49588-fitting-a-hei-module-in-transistor-ignition-unit-1977-280z/ You'll probably have some extra wires down there from the other magnetic pickup coil. And you'll need to figure out which wire is power and which is to coil negative. Engine Electrical chapter should help. Or just use a meter.
