'72 240Z Rebuild

Lifetime warranty, endless exchanges!  All I need is my name and phone number at OReilly and they can tell me if I get free exchanges.  No receipt necessary.

My "brand new" replacement reman alternator has been sitting on the shelf in my garage for about 4 years.

Cool. Another crisis averted.

I have so little faith in the rebuilt stuff these days. How does something like you had get out of the rebuilder's shop? Should never happen.

I have a friend who used to work on the line at a parts rebuild shop (alternators, water pumps, etc).  Mind-numbing work.  He had some interesting stories!

When I was a kid, I remember going to a local shop that rebuilt alternators. It always smelled like marijuana in there and I thought, "when I get a car, I'll never take anything here to get repaired..these guys are on DRUGS!" Then as a got older I realized that those guys were probably very focused on their trade ;-)

It's too bad little shops like that don't exist around here anymore.

What threw me was that black plastic cage on back.  I assume when they rebuild one they have to tear into the rear to replace parts and put that on there to keep the wires from falling out?  I thought that was what made it an "internal regulator".

Thanks for the all the help, I'm cranking it this morning when all my "good neighbors" go to church.  Hoping that I can run it for 20 minutes this time.

I have always heard that chain store alternator rebuilds are junk. I searched and found a local alternator shop that specializes in starters and alternators when I needed to replace the one in my '78. For the same money as a parts store rebuild, I got a quality rebuild. I actually bought an '85 Maxima alternator and they swapped the pulley from a multi-rib to a V and then they found an electrical connector that worked and even gave me the schematic to make a jumper harness. The whole unit was plug and play other than a simple jumper. I now have a 110 amp alternator that looks stock.

I'm sure most cities still have shops like this.

25 minutes at 2,000 rpm, finally!  And it's got some snap to it. Exhaust was massive amount of air, no smoke either. 8^)

It ran hot but not too far past the right leg of the M in TEMP. That's hot for mine too.

I deleted all the stuff off the balance tube so I had to pop the plastic marble off the pedal. It wouldn't get lower than 2400 at first. I'll figure all that out later. It's Miller time now!  I'm gonna get on my mower.

Thanks for the help guys. As always I couldn't have done it without help from the forum.

The more I drink the more I think. I shoulda' drank more in elementary school.

That thing is more zippy on account of the aluminium flywheel.

The a/c fast idle connecting arm off the front carb is hitting the heat shield. I'll either have to cut it or the heat shield.  More thoughts, more beer.  8^)

Mowing grass is better than smoking it. LOL
