This is interesting.... The ECU that was still in the car is an old style and it has all the pins on the ECU connector...weird

Did the California ECUs have more pins?

Mine was a Canadian car, and as far as I know, the ECU with multiple pins was the original one with the car....

I'll bet that if you can identify what the extra pins are for, it will tell you  what kind of ECU board it is.

The pins aren't connected to anything inside are they?  Probably pre-made connectors, wasteful manufacturing.  Maybe ran out of the other stock and used those to finish an order.  I have one of each of those too, a full set and one pinned to match the diagram.

Thanks much for the pics of that ECU with the DIP packages. Unfortunately no new info. Those are the exact same part numbers that are on the original round heat sinked versions. Still custom, still no datasheets in the public domain, and still made from unobtainium.

 

So have you tried that newer ECU in the car yet? Just to make sure it works?

• The good thing is that Suprlen says the Hellfire ECU can be swapped-into the Zed's ECU frame, and still use the OE connector.

cygnusx1, Thanks for that and that's some awesome info, but I don't think it pertains to the first gen Z's. I've been through that stuff from all angles and I believe the work done on those old internets pages is from a different ECU. Might be a ZX, but it's not a first gen.

 

Haha!! Too bad Al Gore isn't a forum member. I bet he could help with tracking down the origins! 

Well, that info was for the L-Jetronic.  I suppose we got the knockoff version in the 75-78 Z cars? JECS?
