Posted April 5, 20159 yr comment_467121 I need to finally replace my old vent hoses on my 71. I am seeing pieces of what I believe to be aged rubber showing up in my clear fuel filters. I saw one of the old hoses back by my tail light, and it specifically said "Not for fuel use " on it! Duh. Do I need to purchase the kit of specific hoses for the 240Z, or can I just locate fuel approved hoses that are long enough to be able to fit. I have found one kit with all hoses online for 225 dollars. Seems a but steep for rubber fuel line. i seem to recall one of the hoses takes a few turns and the OEM part is most desirable, but can other cheaper hoses work? What diameter are these hoses anyway? April 5, 20159 yr comment_467123 Most of the hoses are NLA. April 5, 20159 yr comment_467124 i've seen a few posts where folks have stuffed a piece of spring inside the hose that does the sharp bends to keep it from collapsing/pinching from the bend. you can usually find a good selection of springs at the hardware store. others will have more complete info on hose size, but i can't see why regular fuel line wouldn't be fine for the vents. i think the $$$$ kits are really about having concours-correct, cloth braided, OEM stuff in there, which is sure to make your z run better, boost power by 10% and score points with all the ladies... April 5, 20159 yr comment_467125 Springs for bending hoses: https://www.google.com/search?q=goodyear+hose+bender&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8#q=goodyear+ez+coilNow if you want OEM hoses, you can search http://www.carpartsmanual.com for the part numbers and check with a dealership if they are available. Courtesy Nissan has a feature to search to see if a part number is still available: http://www.courtesyparts.com. April 5, 20159 yr comment_467133 I bought all fuel hose rated diameters at O'Reillys. Quarter inch to five eights. Cost $68 including the clamps. April 7, 20159 yr comment_467239 I used aftermarket oil/fuel resistant hose, but it was tough getting it in. Looks like this http://img.diytrade.com/cdimg/2021928/31679391/0/1359009251/Fuel_hose_oil_hose.jpg If you want more OEM look, you can go for nylon braided oil/fuel line, like this http://autofittings-uk.com/shop/en/nylon-braided-hose/143-an-6-an6-nylon-braided-oil-fuel-line-stealth-black-hose-6-meter-autobahn88-hs026-a06.html Edited April 7, 20159 yr by bartsscooterservice Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/51245-gas-tank-vent-hoses-how-specific-do-they-have-to-be/#findComment-467239 Share on other sites
April 7, 20159 yr comment_467244 Somebody tell me how I screwed this up, but the car ran perfectly (until I pulled the motor) and I had no fuel smell. Using this diagram graciously made by Travel'n Man: removed the vapor tank completely discarded green hose, capped vent on tank discarded blue hose, capped vent on tank discarded yellow hose connected orange vent on tank to yellow vent on fuel filler By "discarded" i mean "allowed to disintegrate after touching". I kept the vapor tank just in case but i cant say I've missed it. This is how the fuel venting works on dirt bikes and the few classic vehicles I have worked on that existed before emissions regulation existed. I am trying to do the same.
