This is nuts.

"Then there's the new BMW M5, a 560-horsepower sports sedan. As you might expect, it literally screams "high performance" when you stand on the throttle -- except what you're hearing isn't the twin-turbo V-8. It's actually a digital recreation of what the engine should sound like, piped through the M5's sound system."

Virtual exhaust notes! Good Grief. So next I can upgrade my audio in my 4 cyl. daily driver to sound like a big block V8. Or maybe a 12 cyl. Ferrari, Yeah that's it. Oh yeah and some big a$$ speakers so everyone around me can hear it too. Good Grief.

A nice smoke generator and associated sounds of screeching tires played through the speakers would be a nice addition to this.  With that it would be possible to give the appearance of smoking the tires with the ignition off and the key safely in the pocket.

This is far from uncommon and most high-end cars are using the technology.  Porsches, Corvettes, BMWs, Mustangs, etc. all use it.  Interiors are becoming so quiet that cars need some help at times to sound good.

Kind of like putting bubble gum cards in your bicycle spokes when you were a kid!

What a great memory I'd forgotten!

My two cousins and myself used my grandparents Rook Cards one day and got into big trouble.  They were some Rook playing partiers on Saturday nights, smoking Pall Malls and drinking Schlitz.

Wow......From cards in the spokes, sparking cans on the feet, no fenders on the bike to Stage III cams, big brakes and Borla exhaust.......a pattern is emerging here!

I think it has more to do with the fact the interior of these cars are so quiet.  They want to enhance the experience by bringing the outside noise back into the cabin.  Some manufacturers are using this technology to create active noise cancelation....   Pretty cool but I wonder if this feature can be disabled at will...  Here's a good article about it in Car & Driver.  The LFA is pretty sweet considering they tuned the engine noise...  wow.
