March 17, 200321 yr comment_30243 Turn the headlights on and turn it over. Do the headlights dim when you try to start? If not it might be the starter. If it turns over but won't start it might be something else. And if the headlights go dim when you try to start it, it's a dead battery. March 17, 200321 yr comment_30244 If it won't turn over, it won't be the coil wire....:cross-eye Sounds more like either a loose battery cable, or a bad connection at the starter. If not that, might be the starter solenoid has gone... or the ignition switch...or....Did you check your fuses, the "common" 20 amp(depending on your year, lower right corner)?? Do you hear a clicking when you hit the key? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/5181-help/#findComment-30244 Share on other sites
March 17, 200321 yr Author comment_30246 Battery cable not loose, i have already tightened the starter connections, but i do not hear "clicking" when i turn her over, i hear nothing!74-260 by the way. March 17, 200321 yr comment_30248 it was the power wire to the coil or the ground i cant remember old age i guess but the car wouldnt do a damn thing till i hooked it back up Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/5181-help/#findComment-30248 Share on other sites
March 17, 200321 yr comment_30249 Have you tried using some jumpers directly to the starter? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/5181-help/#findComment-30249 Share on other sites
March 18, 200321 yr comment_30266 The 260 also had some cursed "anti-theft" i think they called it- the seatbelts had to be hooked, tranny in neutral, maybe something else i am forgetting. I seem to remember disconnecting the wires that are beneath the seats, and mine wouldn't turn over either, till i plugged them back together. Been awhile, but you may check it out??Otherwise i'd try jumping across the starter solenoid like mentioned earlier. Good luck! March 18, 200321 yr comment_30295 sounds like the connection to the solenoid. My car used to do that all the time. All it did was make the "clicking" sound. I jiggled the connection and it fired right up. The connector had some crud on it, so it wasn't getting good conductivity. I've since put a new connector on it. It could be the starter itself though. Is your starter a rebuild??? I went through 3 of them before getting one that worked. March 18, 200321 yr Author comment_30351 How does one decifer if it is the solenoid or the starter that has gone bad? I believe at this point that is where the problem is.Thanks,Zlish Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/5181-help/#findComment-30351 Share on other sites
March 18, 200321 yr comment_30352 Usually if the starter is the problem, when you hit the key, the starter will spin and not engage the flywheel. If it's the solenoid, it will be silent when you hit the key. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/5181-help/#findComment-30352 Share on other sites
