Where to get a cam from?

Just curious, I'm getting ready to buy an aftermarket cam. Mostly for street but definately modified. What would you suggest? And where can I get it. So far my options are Motorsports or V.B.

I've looked at a few different suppliers, and for the price, the MSA cam kit seems to give you the most for the price.

I've seen bare cams listed for 255 on another site, and by the time you add the springs, lash pads, keepers and all that, the MSA kit is a bit cheaper.

Best thing is, once you tell them what you are expecting out of the cam, they will advise you on the lash pad thickness to go with the cam.

MSA's kit is 489.95, which seems like quite a bit until you think about it giving you the proper lash pads, new springs, etc... only thing you'd need to supply is the new valve seals...

Personally, I'd go with their 17030 or 17033 gind. Either gives you good power in the lower revs and pulls up to 5 to 6K.:ermm:

I've been thinking MSA also, seems they have the best deal for the entire kit, (springs, pads & new rockers). They don't specify what brand of cam they sell. VB sells Crane cams. More expensive if you factor in the springs, pads & rockers.

If I do order from MSA can they tell what thickness lash pad I will need by me telling them what's been done to the head?

They ought to, and possibly even supply you with the cam tower shims if your head has been shaved top and bottom.

FWIW, I found Crane cams on another site, that were 255 and up, just for the cam, then you'd have to buy springs, lash pads etc...:ermm:

comp cams would be another source for the cam itself. The have several standard grinds available and you can even get a custom grind. Also I heard that their xtreme energy line of cams was going to be expanded to include the l-series motors. I have found that comp is one of the best companies out there for tech support and performance of the product.

just my 2 cents.

The MSA advice is good, but to me it seems that they don't want to deliver to Germany any longer. For years I got a lot of parts for my 4 Zs from MSA and I already made a BIG order in Jan. and Febr. but I did not even get an answer on my e-mails whether they got my orders or not. I don't understand that, is it because of the german politics on Iraque war? Sorry, now I have to look for other sources. Has anyone made similar experiances ?

I also agree with the MSA idea - however having said that I just ordered a Cam from Schneider. It came complete with springs and lash pads - no rocker arms - but then again I've little success with aftermarket rocker arms (wiping out cam lobes). The Schneider product appears to be an excellent cam - not an obvious regrind - I wonder if they have access to billets? Check out their products athttp://www.flatlanderracing.com/schcamsdatsun.html

Note - I went big - .560/300. :classic:

2manyz,

you are encouraging me. May be I'm a bit too sensitive at the moment because of politics and sometimes may be different estimations of the situation and different mentalities.

I always had good contacts to MSA - and there to Joseph C. - that I asked myself what might have happened. I will send him a fax, okay?

By the way, as far as I remember the MSA cams are Schneider.
