Seat belt query

Recommended Posts

I have a 4/74 260z coupe without seat belts, my w/shop manual shows a retractor mechanisim mounted on a bracket on the strut tower then the belt going through a guide along side the seat at shoulder height , i have also seen this on a 76 model.

has anyone seen an early 260 2 seater with the same belts as a 240 because i cant see where the retractor mechanism bracket would attach to the tower , i e betweem the strut cap and the rear quarter panel.

RogerZ,

the 260z 2 seater has three recognised configurations for seat belts for Australia, the first batch was similar to the Australian delivery 240z I believe you will find this is the group your Z falls into. the next group had a twisted wire style pilar attached guide and strut tower mounted reel, the third type is identified by smooth metal pillar guides made of solid metal with reels mounted same.

"Caution" both reel types have right and left hand reels, and the two types have variations in hardware. The attachment latches between type three and two will not interchange, It is not hard to install as an upgrade package, the down side you need to source the whole package as parts are not common.

hope this helps you

cheers

Thanks Steve thats a great help , I'll check out a few more cars ,the 2 seaters are a bit thin on the ground over here.

Steve you were right , i must be blind, the top seat belt mounting hole is there through the upper portion of the inner plastic window trim. 240 belts it is then.

Does any other Datsun use the same ( or will fit O.K. ) non retractor belt set up.

Thanks

RogerZ, I must say I have not found a good supply of belts from another vehicle type. I think you will have to find an early 260Z or 240Z to provide the belts. There is the possibility that replacement belts may be available thru Z spares suppliers.

If you after second hand:

Try Carlos at

http://www.sportsclassic.com.au

he has a large inventory of 240Z/260Z second hand.

If you want to chase new surplus:

Try Warren at

http://www.allzparts.com.au

he gets all different types of parts in from Japan and other places.

Hope this will help you

good luck

just in case you have'nt found any, i have a set(left and right) that i fulled-out from a 74 240z by mistake. i thought it will fit my 72 240z but the housing of the bottom retractor is bigger than what i have from the 72. the top(shoulder belt) retrator is not mounted on the strut tower area, it is mounted on the side of the rear door/(or window, i dont know what it is called). i got it for $24.00. i will probably bring it back this coming friday for credit from the wrecking yard, not unless, u need it. let me know. The belts in my 74 260Z were looking a bit jaded and the 'boss' in the passenger side kept telling me I needed new ones.

Anyhow, after looking around for a while I found a Klippan brand ( I think made in Aust or NZ) rear retractable lap/sash belt model no. K2578 which fitted exactly where my old belt fitted.

My fitting is the one which mounts flat on the top of the strut tower with the belt passing through the twisted wire bracket mounted just inside the door at shoulder height. The main rectractor part of the belt bolts onto a bracket which is attached to the rear of the strut tower and is bent forward over the top of the tower into which the retractor mechanism fits.!! (I hope that makes sense).

The Klippan belt I bought bolts in perfectly. The only change I had to make was with the stalk on the tunnel side which the belt buckles into. On the bottom of the original stalk it was bent at about a 45 degree angle to allow for the curve of the tunnel. The Klippan one was staright at the end and I had to bend it at 45 degrees or so and it fitted perfectly.

I hope this helps, I will try and get some pics in the near future.

Regards,

Geoff

Thanks for the info, my 260 has the same seat belt mtg as the 240, ive got belts now but will replace them with "klippan" ones later as i would prefer to have a stalk mounted belt reciever.

They are available at most large auto shops or trade houses like Repco etc.

Cheers

My belts cost about AUD$160 for the pair and they were purchased from a Pep's auto store. You have the option of a belt or wire stalk for the receiving side of the belt.
