December 18, 20159 yr comment_483101 i haven't had any problems with the fel Pro you get from Autozone, except sometimes they get damaged in shipping and they have to reorder me one:(That's what I've used on my 280s N42, felpro. I think my mistake was using antiseize between the head and gasket, it's got a slight "tick" other than the valvetrain. So to be honest, I haven't used that style Nissan yet. But everything ive read has been positive. December 18, 20159 yr Author comment_483104 MSA states not to use the stock one with headers?? ... http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/classic19a/10-2525 Honestly, I haven't opened mine yet to see what it's made out of. I guess that's my first step haha. It sounds like maybe they used to have ones that were paper and then in roughly '05 they changed it to an asbestos type material? December 18, 20159 yr comment_483105 On the header install, sometimes they barely touch against the bellhousing or transmission. Slight grind on the bellhousing is all. You'll see what I'm talking about. December 18, 20159 yr Author comment_483109 So can I put the header on first and then still get the trans on? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/52581-my-winter-project-l28-swap-into-my-240z/?&page=7#findComment-483109 Share on other sites
December 18, 20159 yr comment_483110 I did the motor and transmission first, then dressed it up. I'm on my phone now but will post a picture of my set up. You need to build this wooden crate looking thing, I can get the measurements, to mate the motor (on the wooden thing) and the trans., on some kind of jack. If you're trying to do this by yourself. December 19, 20159 yr comment_483150 Try your best to decipher my scattered brains this morning. Mr Zedyone_kenobi had a great thread about his motor swap, showed a crate he built for the motor. I built the crate, added some steel wheels. Put the tranny on my motorcycle jack and slid them up to each other, bolted them together. Picked the whole thing up with my engine hoist and put it into the car. The 2x is too thick to let the rear clear the board so I had to chisel out 3/4" of the thickness and went down about 2" so it will clear the rear board, picture #2. You could still use the 2x but cut that out before nailing together. It sat about 1/2" short before I cut that out. But for storage it would be fine. And you'll have to go 1/2" farther back for the oil pump cut out. Here's his thread, very informative read when you have a few hours, it's about 12 pages long. http://www.classiczcars.com/topic/43476-my-datsun-spirit-l28-build/page-5 Go to post #86 for the crate info. Here's mine ready for installation. Looking back at his, I used 2x6 wood his is 1x6. I would use 1x6 to avoid the problem with the rear not hanging off enough to mate the transmission. December 23, 20159 yr Author comment_483428 I've been making some great progress the last couple days here that I've had off and had the house to myself. I installed the electric fuel pump and got it all hooked up. Took forever for me to drill through the swaybar bracket to mount the pump. But got in and replaced all the fuel hose back there too. Got the Technoversions diff snub mount in too. That took a bit of work to wrestle the bracket into place. Then yesterday I got a bunch of stuff steam cleaned up/painted up/polished up. Rebuilt my carbs with the Z Therapy kit, got the studs off my old intake onto the N36 intake. Then I test fitted everything together. Still waiting for a few little parts from MSA that I realized I needed or should be replaced...and still waiting for my trans, but other than that...some great progress.
