here is a pic of the firewall. the tag on the doorpost has a totally different number and is 6 digits

 

 

as far as i can tell, the paint on the inside and engine side of the firewall match, as well as in the spare tire well and under the windshield seal. so the firewall replacment doesnt make sense. does anyone have a pic of the fasteners that hold the doorpost tag on? id like to see if mine are the same.

That appears to be a 72 VIN. There is definitely something strange going on if it was titled as a 73. I would be surprised if an early 72 stayed on a dealer lot that it might have been titled as a 73.

Mine is held on with pop rivets with a 4mm head.  Pretty sure its never been off the car.

the title says 1972, but the door post tag says 5/73. i was thinking of bringing up these discrepencies (sp?) with the dmv, but i think that would just bite me in the backside.

As for the door jamb and engine compartment nameplates, I stand by my original theory... Someone took the (removable) aluminum plates off to paint the car and never put them back on. Car changed ownership and the new owner thought it looked weird to be missing those plates, so he grabbed a pair off a wreck and screwed them to the car. Then you bought it.

 

The one in the engine compartment screws on and the other two (door jamb and dashboard) are held on by pop-rivets. Those three are easy to remove and reinstall.

The owner is good Z people. He only takes checks or cash. No credit cards. I've bought plenty of stuff from him and wouldn't hesitate to use him again.

My 12/70 build 240Z only has 5 digits after the HLS30 stamped on the firewall or the ID plates for that mater.  I do not think Nissan worried about having 6 digits.

 

That data from Black Dragon also claims the production dates were 10/69 to 5/70 for the series one cars.  So they built all the cars up to serial number 21000 by May of 1970 and then stamped build dates as they sold them?  I find that hard to believe.

I think that the Black Dragon SN data came from the Nissan Parts micro fiche, mine is dated 1979. The Nissan document also shows the same problem with the with 1970 SN's, likely the May '70 date was an error and should have read Dec '70. Here is the micro fiche page showing the issue.

Same boat here... no engine bay plate. I think there is a link somewhere to a supplier though... I will look!

Are the digits completely different between the firewall and the plates?

I went to Black Dragon just for fun to check on my 240Z vin number. This is what they said. I tried to copy it, but that wouldn't work.

This is the first two entries they list:

My 240 I purchased new 1/71, the riveted door tag:
