October 21, 20159 yr comment_479526 I went to Black Dragon just for fun to check on my 240Z vin number. This is what they said. I tried to copy it, but that wouldn't work. This is the first two entries they list:240Z ******coupe****** engine******model year******prod date****** chassis numberYes********yes*********L24*********1970************10/69-5/70*****000013-021000Yes*******yes**********L24*********1971************1/71-8 /71******021001-046000My 240 I purchased new 1/71, the riveted door tag:Yes*******yes**********L24*********1971*************10/70***********HLS30-11904She does not fit in their first line of production.Strange eh?JaiHere are some other references:http://zhome.com/History/DesignChanges.htmhttp://zhome.com/History/1970or1971.html Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/52648-vin-number-questions/?&page=3#findComment-479526 Share on other sites
October 22, 20159 yr comment_479552 Thanks wheee! I see they also have the 77-78 style like what my car needs. I'm just not sure I want it fifty bucks bad. I'd love to have one, but there's lots of other places my car could use fifty bucks! October 22, 20159 yr comment_479572 Thanks wheee! I see they also have the 77-78 style like what my car needs. I'm just not sure I want it fifty bucks bad. I'd love to have one, but there's lots of other places my car could use fifty bucks! I hear you... However in the big scheme of things, my complete restoration is going to cost me so much, I will regret not having the proper engine plate. And one that I can stamp with the correct VIN and engine serial number too! Not sure if I should get two though for when I swap the engine from the stock block to the built block.... arrrgh Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/52648-vin-number-questions/?&page=3#findComment-479572 Share on other sites
October 22, 20159 yr comment_479574 For me I think it's a little less important because on the 77-78 plates, they even stopped putting the engine serial number on it. It's VIN only, so even from the factory, you can't use the plate to determine engine originality. I only want one because it looks funny to not have one. The bottom one made sense as to Redwing. I missed by one month of having a '70 instead of a '71. Same car! HahahaI am so very excited for you and Tim to work on my RedBird, see you both tomorrow. October 22, 20159 yr comment_479576 The good Captain caught it. I was misled because you said it was a 73. Go here: http://zzxdatsun.com/catDecals.phpThe owner is good Z people. He only takes checks or cash. No credit cards. I've bought plenty of stuff from him and wouldn't hesitate to use him again. Mike McGinnis of Banzai s a really good guy and his stuff is cheaper than most other places. He says that MSA/Dragon actually buy from him.I got a engine bay VIN plate from him because mine was badly corroded. It was about $5 cheaper than anywhere else.I brought it to a place that makes trophies and had it engraved.Unfortunately no one does stamping anymore but it came out great. My car will be a resto-mod anyways.... not going to be original by any stretch! Most good hardware/tool stores sell letter and number punches. Not a big issue to have done at a good garage either probably. I have a set at work for marking weapons and sights etc. (military) Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/52648-vin-number-questions/?&page=3#findComment-479578 Share on other sites

October 25, 20159 yr Author comment_479771 well thanks to you all. i finally figured this out. the door tag, (which i thought was rivited on) was actually held on with screws which had been covered with some kind of epoxy. if any of you has the car to which these tags belong, let me know and ill send them to you. October 25, 20159 yr comment_479784 Nice gesture. I suspect the car those tags came from went to the great junkyard in the sky. So you're going to buy new plates that match your firewall stamping?
