Well I have had my Z since 2008 and have loved it with every drop of blood and sweat in my body. Still do, just love her to death.  Every now and then I get the hankering for something a bit more exotic.  Call it stupidity, call it insanity, or just call it what it is. I have a short attention span. 

 

I have started to get the itch for some german or Italian metal.  Namely a Alfa GTV or a Porsche 911.

Now the long nose 911s have floated beyond what I can ever afford.  But the SC's and on seem to be in my wheel house.

 

I was thinking of selling my Z AND my roadster as a pair (or separately) and hopefully I can get close to enough cash to snag a decent 911 or GTV.

 

I know it is crazy, as I adore both cars. But I just do not have time to drive both as much as they need.  And selling one is too hard to think of, so somehow I can rationalize selling both and starting fresh. It would take me a solid two days to photograph both cars and documentation and receipts I have. 

 

But if Arne was here, he could tell me about the 911 experience. 

 

Am I crazy.  I do love the Z.  With the Suspension redo, it is now the best it has ever been. 

 

 

Since I bought my first Z (1975 280Z) in 1988 (and still own it) I've bought a lot of other cars. I'm not sure what car I'd rather have than a Z. My 1988 M3 was a great car and a lot of fun. I liked my BMW 2002s and still have a tii and turbo. The nice thing about those BMWs is that they seat 4. I've owned a supercharged Lotus Elise for a few years now and love it. It's quicker/faster than my Zs but the ride is pretty harsh, there's limited storage and ingress/egress is a PITA. I bought a Pantera last year. It's a great car with a lot of V8 big block power but the driving position is awkward with your legs cocked to the right. I also have a 1970 Road Runner 440+6 and AAR 'cuda. They're very different than a Z in almost every way. I had a 1971 911T project but never got to drive it.

 

I like to try new cars but I like the Z the best. A 911 would be close but the cost of parts scares me away. And what car could be easier to work on than a Z? I have a feeling that at some point you'd regret selling your Z. It's a decision that only you can make. For me the Z wins in the smiles per dollar category.

We all know you and the rest of us on this forum are crazy. That settled, just let me say this...."every Z I've ever sold, I regretted". I've owned 3 911's and currently own a really nice NSX....I enjoy driving the green 72 Z more than any of them. Porsches are awesome. really cool cars.....just don't take 'em in for repairs and let the wife see the bill. Also, I never really felt comfortable working on 'em....even changing the plugs was a pain. My opinion....sell the Roadster and buy a 1995 911 (best year for the 993's), or an NSX (no repairs needed).....keep that beautiful Z.

Man, an NSX.. never thought of that one.  Always wanted one for damn sure.

NSX bubble has left me behind. I don't roll that hard.  Cheapest one I found was 1991 for 89000

 

The problem is that the Z is just so mod friendly, easy to work on, parts are cheap, and all the same reasons I picked the Z versus the GTV and 911 8 years ago are still true.  Then I see a long nose RS clone and I get weak in the knees.

Lotus Elise

I think you just convinced me to remove the vertical bumperettes on my front bumper blue.

How can you possibly sell the Z when you still have plans on changing it? (Blue's bumpers) 

 I like to wear my Datsun cap It starts a lot of conversations. Hundreds by now. EVERYONE that I've talked with, regretted selling their Datsun. Not too hard to figure out, they were almost all 510s & Zs.

 I think I would move it to a friend's garage and see how much I would miss it before selling it. No driving it, no admiring it, no working on it, no contact. It would drive me nuts.

 IMHO, If you can afford to keep it, do so. You can always sell it later when you're sure. The fact that you asked the question tells me that you should keep it. 

I agree, about once very three years I have started a thread like this. You guys keep me sane..  It is next to impossible to sell a car without a single bad vice.

I am just now seeing this thread but glad you came to your senses Zed.  I will only add the words that the original owner of my Z had for me when I got to meet him a few weeks ago, "great looking car, makes me wonder why I ever sold it"  And he had it for twenty-five years.

 

The energy and excitement of getting a new car is definitely intoxicating, but it comes and goes.  However, the regret of letting one go is a pain that never completely goes away.

i love the gtv - a friend has one that is pristine and it just screams italian style and all the cool that goes along.

but...

 

the z is still amazingly accessible in terms of cost of ownership that i can happily drive it to work every single day and park it in the supermarket without hiring a bodyguard.

not a day goes by that i don't get a smile and "...my buddy had one of those in high school" which usually starts a nice chat. i've even had folks roll down the window at stoplights to have that conversation. not sure that would be the same with something a little more exotic...

It sounds like you are coming to your senses about keeping the Z.  Believe me, if you sell it, you will be kicking yourself for years.  I sold my yellow '71 Z almost 5 years ago, and I am still kicking myself.  And I still have my '70 Z.   These cars get under your skin. I have had 4 of them and would still like to get another. They are terrific cars for all the reasons stated above.  Keep the Z and sell the roadster if you must.
