New 240Z owner!

Hey guys, my name is Collin and I am a 22 year old new 240Z owner! This is an absolute dream car for me, and I never thought that I'd own one this early in life, but my grandfather found an incredible deal on two that I could not pass up! One is a 1972, that'll be used for parts, and the other is a 1971, which is pictured, that'll be restored. I got all of this for $500!!! The guy has already rebuilt the carbs and done a few other things, which is awesome! I have two hoods and tons of parts and will be picking everything up on Monday! The 1971 has a few pretty bad rot spots, but that is to be expected. For the price, I am absolutely thrilled!!! My goal is to deal with all the rust and rot and sort out all the mechanical bits in one year. The biggest thing I will have to start learning is how to weld. I started learning TIG when I apprenticed at a classic car restoration shop a good while back, but I hear MIG is easier. It really all depends on what I can get my hands on. I am just dying to get started on this, working and learning as I go! I look forward to sharing what I do and also asking questions, on what seems to be a great forum!

Where do you guys recommend getting replacement panels from? Rustrepair.com or thezstore.com? Looks like my mechanic friend who rents out a portion of my Papa's shop has a MIG welder and is willing to teach me some and let me use it! Ahh, I cannot wait!!!

MIG is easier than TIG because you just set it and pull the trigger, no foot pedal and no feeding material by hand. TIG is much better for delicate work. If you are careful MIG will do everything you need to do for panel repair. Tabco has some of the panels for the doglegs and such. Charlie Osbourne has the best floor pans. Bad Dog makes good frame rail upgrades. The other panels, like tail light and rear apron, from who ever you can get them from. I would buy pieces cut from a donor car if I could source them because they fit better. This is especially true under the battery tray as no one has that sheet metal and making it by hand is a PITA, been there done that. The color inside the passenger door is probably the original color and is very desirable for this year car. Best of luck. Stay after it and you will have a nice car..

How exciting, congrats. Get yourself a copy of Wick Humble's bible, http://www.amazon.com/How-Restore-Your-Datsun-Z-Car/dp/1931128022. There is not much he doesn't cover thoroughly. But do yourself a favor, as soon as it arrives take your brand new copy to The Office Depot/Staples and have them Shurlock the binding because it will fall apart after the first week of using it.

 

I hope you will keep a restoration thread going here on the forum, you will not find more encouragement and knowledge about Z's then you will from these guys.

I really appreciate all of the advice! You guys are awesome! I have a build thread for my 2001 Jeep Cherokee on Jeep Forum. That place and the people are extremely helpful, and this forum reminds me of that already! I will definitely keep a build thread going!
