CanTechZ Posted November 2, 2015 Share #2 Posted November 2, 2015 Under dash to the right of the steering wheel. See item 17 on this picture from the owners manual. This is from a 1970 but I think the '72 is in the same place. HTH Mike
Captain Obvious Posted November 3, 2015 Share #3 Posted November 3, 2015 It's on the wiring diagram at the top, near the right corner. Up by the fuel pump. And one interesting tidbit... On the USA and Canada diagram, it does ay RHEOSTAT (IF EQUIPPED), so I don't know if it's really the case or not, the implication is that maybe not all cars got one? TomoHawk Posted November 6, 2015 Share #8 Posted November 6, 2015 FYI, If you wish to replace the rheostat with something better (a modern electronic control) there is a recent topic discussing that. It uses a PWM to control the light and you can use it with either incandescent or LED bulbs.
sweatybetty Posted November 12, 2015 Author Share #9 Posted November 12, 2015 thank you all. i dont quite know if some p.o. took the reostat out, or there ever was one. i found the spot on the bottom of the dash but there isnt anything there. SteveJ Posted November 12, 2015 Share #10 Posted November 12, 2015 How long have you owned the car? It wouldn't have been difficult for a previous owner to connect the two wires together and bypass the rheostat if it went bad.

SteveJ Posted November 15, 2015 Share #12 Posted November 15, 2015 I have a dash sitting around with the rheostat in it. The knob needs to be replaced. I'll check to see if it's good.
