Wiring coming from Oil Sump...

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

as the car is on axle stands to renew the front bushings, i found it a good opportunity to inspect under the car..

I found a wire dangling out from the oil sump that has a connector on the end. What is this wire for and where do i reconnect it too? I looked but couldnt seem to find a place for it to go..

Thanks.

Can't imagine what a wire would be doing coming out of the oil sump (pan, right?) There isn't anything in there except oil, zand the pick-up tube that sucks the oil up from the bottom of the pan (sump)into the engine block. Nothing electrical in there. I'm confused!:cross-eye

PS George, On further recollection, when I removed my front traverse links, I did have to place a jack under the brake rotor and raise it slightly to move the steering tie-rod ends up enough to remove the bolt you referred to. When I re-installed, I did as Keith suggested and put the NUT on the forward side, so that I would not need to bother with that next time.

Hmm, might need a pic of that one....

Only reason I can think of for a wire coming out or off the iol pan would be for an oil temperature sending unit. Someone may have put an oil temp gauge in the car at one time or other? Other possibilities, but would have to see it or know exactly where it is....

It definitely is a wire coming out of there... it may take some time for me to find a camera but I will take one for you guys to see.

Carl - Thanks for the further information regarding the lower control arm screw.... things are all in bits at the moment... awaiting parts.

George,

That's the Oil Temperature sender you found. Your engine is from a 280ZX right? The 240Z that its installed in ( your car ) would not have a stock place to hook it up to - so that's why its not connected to anything............... Unless you want an Oil Temp gauge in your car, then I'd ignore it if I were you. Its one less thing to worry about.

Regarding the bolts on your TCA's - the Factory usually installed them with the nut on the forward end, meaning you can withdraw the bolts towards the bellhousing rather than towards the steering rack. If yours were installed the other way around, then it was either built on a Friday afternoon at the Factory or somebody else has had them out before you.

As has been recommended, they are best installed from the rearward side of the crossmember.

Alan-- thank you for using your lateral way of thinking.... yes it is an L28 (from a 280ZX).. I hadnt thought of that at all!I will ignore the wire.

Carl, Keith sorry to have totally confused you guys! My fault!

I hope my Z wasnt made on a Friday afternoon !

ROFL

Thanks

No problem George, guess in a way I was right even though I completely forgot that your L-28 probably would have come from a ZX and not a 280Z...

I knew the early L-28's in our 280's didn't have the oil temp unit, just wasn't sure if the later ones did or not... Guess that shows how much interest I have in ZX's huh?:cross-eye
