Posted November 26, 20159 yr comment_481739 I have owned a '72 and a '73. Both had wood gearshift knobs. I have seen factory '71s and '72's that didn't and I have seen them that did. I don't think I have ever seen a '73 without a wood knob.Mine does not have a wood gear shift knob but I believe it is factory. Does anyone know what "options" package if there were any, that caused a car to ship with the wood gearshift knob? It drives me nuts that I don't have one and the thought of aftermarket gives me headaches. November 26, 20159 yr comment_481743 The wood gear shift knob was standard equipment on the early cars. It was NOT an option. You can still buy the wood knobs from Nissan, I believe, but they are new production and somewhat different in wood grain than the 1970s originals. There are threads discussing them in the message archive.Dennis Edited November 26, 20159 yr by psdenno Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/52883-wood-gear-shift-knob/#findComment-481743 Share on other sites
November 27, 20159 yr comment_481769 My car came with a black leather Datsun Shift Knob, I asked the previous owner if he had the Original wooded one too, he said that was the Original one and it had never had a wooden one, I've now put an OEM wooden one on as I prefer it Edited November 27, 20159 yr by Red7 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/52883-wood-gear-shift-knob/#findComment-481769 Share on other sites
November 27, 20159 yr Author comment_481772 I agree with your PO. Most had wood but some had the leather. I never understood why some did and some didn't, even in the same model year. $200 for a knob though. OUCH. November 27, 20159 yr comment_481782 I suppose a look through the factory parts manual would answer the question. Anyone got a part number for a leather covered shift knob on the early Zs?Dennis Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/52883-wood-gear-shift-knob/#findComment-481782 Share on other sites
November 27, 20159 yr comment_481783 Here's a parts book page showing an optional one called "KNOB-CONTROL LEVER SKIN" PN C2885-E4600, the others shown say wood. November 27, 20159 yr comment_481795 Applied model says "OP 4speed" is that how other optional equipment is called out on the parts diagrams? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/52883-wood-gear-shift-knob/#findComment-481795 Share on other sites
November 27, 20159 yr comment_481796 Reading the chart, the Applied Model for the skin knob is "OP 4 Speed". What does OP 4 speed mean?Another question about the leather knob some have observed: What emblem does it have - same 4 speed pattern plastic insert as the wood knob or something else?Dennis Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/52883-wood-gear-shift-knob/#findComment-481796 Share on other sites
November 27, 20159 yr comment_481799 Applied model says "OP 4speed" is that how other optional equipment is called out on the parts diagrams?Looks like we both had the same question. If OP designates Optional, was it a dealer installed item or did the the factory assembly line guy get to choose? Or was it just a "dress up part" that could be purchased over the parts counter at the dealer? We did that dealer upgrade as a gift for our son's Scion tC.Dennis Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/52883-wood-gear-shift-knob/#findComment-481799 Share on other sites
November 27, 20159 yr comment_481800 I'm pretty sure "op" does mean optional, here's another example of "op" in the parts book for wheel selection. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/52883-wood-gear-shift-knob/#findComment-481800 Share on other sites

November 27, 20159 yr Author comment_481803 Mystery solved. The leather one was for those back in the '70s with poor taste. Mine just has the gear locations. It doesn't have the "Datsun" logo on it.
