Posted December 2, 20159 yr comment_482141 I need to replace the carpet on my '71. 240z's have 2 metal tabs under each seat to hold the carpet in place. All the photos I see of replacement carpets do not have the loops cut in the carpet to fit through those tabs. Does anyone know if the replacement carpets have those loops and they are just not shown in the product images? If they don't exist, how do you hold the carpets in place? I don't want to glue them to the floor Thanks. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/52913-new-carpet-question-for-240z/ Share on other sites
December 2, 20159 yr comment_482146 I haven't seen new carpet kits that have the tabs or the snaps. You'll have to transfer them over from the original carpet or have an upholstery shop do it. Even if you don't install the snaps or tabs the carpet still stays in place pretty well without them or glue. December 2, 20159 yr comment_482170 To add to what Chuck said, above, you will need to see if the male snaps are still on the firewall insulator. If so, you will need the carpet snap fasteners to put on your new carpet. Here is a possible source for those. http://www.newportupholstery.com/auto_hardware.htm As for the metal tabs at the aft end of the footwells in front of each seat, you will need to make about 2" slits, do not cut loops, in the appropriate places to accommodate the metal tabs. And finally, if the replacement carpet edges are surge bound with thread, you will need to find someone with a commercial surging machine to surge bind the edges of the slits as youwould a button hole on a shirt. If the replacement carpet is bound with vinyl, just bind the edges of the slits with vinyl using the same technique as the outer edges of the carpet. If you do a search, you may also find that some years of the 240z used squares of velcro sewn to the carpet and glued to the floor. If I find some examples I will add to this threadBest of luck. December 2, 20159 yr comment_482172 87mj, here are some more info which may be of help, and just interesting reading. http://www.classiczcars.com/topic/47879-carpet-snaps-source-for-footwell/?hl=%2Boriginal+%2Bcarpet+%2Bjute#entry435409 http://www.classiczcars.com/topic/8002-original-jute-material/page-1?hl= original carpet jute See item #4 in the second item shown above. It gives a good picture of the velco solution I mentioned. If you are interested in correct originality, Kats offerings are some of the best on this forum. December 2, 20159 yr comment_482174 The only place I know of where the carpets are pre-cut for the metal tabs and have the snaps already installed for the firewall is Chester and Herod: www.autockckms.com They were the original suppliers of carpeting for the 240z. Back when they were first introduced into the US market with rubber mats NOT carpet Chester and Herod was selected as the provider for these cars to satisfy the demand for carpeting. They have the original patterns and after purchasing a set for my 73 240Z I found that I was satisfied and happy to have the original suppliers carpets in my restoration. The base carpet set is loop type and many would say is not very high quality. Nonetheless it is very close to the original, which wasn't very high quality either. If you want to upgrade the quality you can get wool---but it is considerably more expensive. If you give them a call talk to "Jim".He has been there from the beginning and you can discuss exactly what you want and order free samples if you need to do so. December 2, 20159 yr comment_482176 I remember seeing this TSB a while back and I thought it was relevant to this thread: Does anyone have these clips? The dealer was supposed to install them during PDI.
