pocket in 240z floor pan

Good evening,

can anyone tell me what the pocket (notch) is for in the 240z floor pan in front of the seats along the rocker? I have seen this on most floor pan kits and a couple that don't have it.  I have a series one and two. The both have the pocket, but I do not see what purpose it serves.

Jack point or a locating point for the manufacturing process.

I do know it is not a jack point, there is no structure there to support the weight.  I have wondered about manufacturing process, but I am involved in manufacturing process and do not think that is what it is for.

Whatever it is for, it is important enough for replica floor pan makers to want to include it.

I always wondered if they are for the step lights that show up in the parts list, but I have never seen on a car. I know there is a knockout on the cardboard for the door panels that may be for them, I just don't know how the wiring would get from the cab to inside the door. There is no sign of a passthrough from the pillar to the door. The pockets seem about the right size a light.

I have not seen very good parts lists and have not seen the step lights. That is interesting. Is that something you can post a snapshot of?  I would like to see?

Thank you for the link, I have not seen that.  It will be helpful, because one of my cars has all the heater box and duct work disassembled before I bought it.

I cant wait to find out what the pockets are for.  Perhaps something unexpected.

There are no structures in the USDM cars but there might be support structures in the factory rally and competition cars.  If you look under the interior trim at the C-pillar you'll find 4 threaded mounts for the factory racing roll bar.  There are other structures in the basic chassis that are intended only for competition use and were built in on the assembly line.

That is an interesting thought, because the shape is kind of rectangular like a mount pad for a roll bar. Perhaps that would lead to someone knowing of a roll bar mounted there.

The floor-pan 'pockets' are nothing to do with any Factory roll bar/'safety bar'/cage or related structure.

I tend to agree, I looked at some pictures of various professional roll bars and none of them connected in that area.  I have not found any factory race car photos yet.  Eventually, someone will know the answer.

I've been following this thread and scratching my head. Just where are these pockets supposed to be? I don't recall any ahead of the seats in my Series I car.

Anybody got a photo?
