Posted February 17, 20169 yr comment_486686 I took my 1972 240z to a shop for quotation on repair and paint. They have quoted me US$4,500.00 and have asked me to purchase the following materials to mention: - 2 gallons of plastibond -1 gallon of base according to its catalyzer -1 gallon of PPG monopaint -1/4 of black paint -1 221 sealer tube -1 roll of wire -1/2 yard of Wood sanding paper n° 40 -1/2 yard of Wood sanding paper N°80 -1 roll of 50 feet paper -2 gallons of thinner I do not see any anticorrosive paint in this list such as POR-15. Hence, I have the following questions: 1. In the event i cant manage to find POR-15 locally what can be a used as substitute? 2. Is PPG one of the best paint around 3. Am i missing anything on the list? 4. I have attached pics here where the rust is noticeable on the surface. How shall it be treated? Shall it be cut and new metal soldered with mig? February 17, 20169 yr comment_486688 Beware the rust you don't see with a Z. Do you have a budget for this project? Don't forget to factor in a set of new rubber seals for the glass, rear hatch, and doors. cutting out the rust spots and welding in new metal will solve the visible problems, but add expense. Since you're in a tropical area, expect new rust spots to appear as time goes on. Did you get a couple estimates on body work and painting? February 17, 20169 yr comment_486694 If that were my car I would start by personally sand blasting and or chemical stripping the affected rust areas to see whats really under there before going to a paint shop. Like Dennis says theres rust that you cant see and you dont want to find out when the car is all torn down at the body shop because at that point you are totally committed. Treat the known rust areas and when finished spray it with some primer to protect the area until the car gets to the body shop Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/53312-us4500-for-restoration-and-paint/#findComment-486694 Share on other sites
February 17, 20169 yr comment_486695 2 gallons of filler is about 200% of what you should need for a car the size of a Z if it's reasonably straight, even if you sand half of it off on the floor. No primers in your list! Are they supplying primer but not finished paint? That doesn't make sense because they want you to supply paper and sealer... My biggest concern right from the start, is are they planning to fill all the rust holes with filler and then just spray base and color over that and call it done. I would look for a professional shop that doesn't ask you to supply all the materials. I wouldn't POR 15 under any finish paint for any reason, but that's me. Etching primers will work, epoxy primer are better.... I would think in Panama $4,500 would go a pretty good way. $5,000-$6000 would get you a really well done job here where I'm at... February 18, 20169 yr comment_486702 I had mine painted last fall. Before it went to the painter, I stripped it with Airplane Stripper (that's the brand name, not for stripping airplanes) just so I could see where the rust was and take care of that first, and to get a better price/estimate. Also, remove all your badges and lights before just so accidents don't happen. You do not want them to just putty over any rust spots. Otherwise, just throw your money out the window. February 18, 20169 yr Author comment_486742 What will be a substitute for POR15 as Anti Rust? In Panama, we are able to get the following: CRC SOFT SEAL http://www.crcindustries.com.au/products/corrosion-protection-and-inhibitors/soft-seal-corrosion-inhibitor Will this work as anti rust instead of POR15??? February 18, 20169 yr comment_486750 Most importantly you want an epoxy based primer that is guaranteed to work with the paint you are using. you asked if PPG was any good; it is, and you should use a primer from their catalog if you are going to use their paint. There are other good brands as well, just make sure you match the primer and paint from the same paint systems. And like Patcon said, you shouldnt be providing anything but the car to a reputable paint shop. February 18, 20169 yr Author comment_486761 Im delivering the car to the shop on the second week of March. I just found out the shop does not have a sand blasting machine and they will take the rust out using wire brush and some other hand tools. What a pitty! Anyway, i will need to contact another shop that does carry a sand blaster or else setlle with this as this is what we have in Panama!
