CanTechZ Posted March 4, 2016 Share #1 Posted March 4, 2016 While I had the choke assembly disassembled from my 7'70 240z to deal with a sticky choke issue I started to measure and model the parts as an exercise while I had some free time. It got me thinking that others might be doing the same with other parts and might like to share stories and maybe a few cad files or just to show off what you are working on. I am a mechanical designer and use Solid Edge as my primary 3D solid modeling tool, I am also learning Solid Works and have a background with 2D AutoCAD. Here is a sample of the work I have done so far, comments welcomed from cad and non-cad users alike. If we get to the point of sharing cad files I'm wondering if @Mike would consider adding a 2D/3D cad section to our downloads area, if file size is an issue limits could be established. Cheers, Mike
Stanley Posted March 4, 2016 Share #2 Posted March 4, 2016 Strangely, I had the same idea about a CAD section when I was messing around with my 3D CAD last night. I was thinking about drawing some headers, and was wishing there was a CAD model of an S30 with engine bay, and engine with transmission and carbs available to work from. Our member from St. Petersburg drew up a nice one, put tons of work into it, and others added to it, but the links didn't work for me. There are probably a few places that can build headers from 3D model, if not there probably will be in the near future. Your model looks good. It encouraged me to learn my CAD better. I've done drafting with Solid Edge 2D for a while for my work, doing construction plans. Also use SketchUp. Got ViaCad Pro a few months ago, mainly for detailing steel frame connections, but haven't learned it yet, so far just drew some burgers and shakes on a tray. The Nissan engineers and draftsmen did nice work, all with pencil and paper, including 3D cutaways, etc. CAD section would be the place to post that stuff, since any dimensioned 2D drawings can be a starting point for 3D models. I expect the old drawings that aren't dimensioned are drawn to correct scale, so they can easily be pulled out to match a known dimension like wheelbase, and all the other dimensions can be filled in. I wonder how reproduction body parts are made. Do they use CAD/CAM for that ?

CanTechZ Posted March 7, 2016 Author Share #7 Posted March 7, 2016 If any one is looking for a free solid modeling cad option you might want to check out Onshape. I'm not a user or afilliated but it looks interesting. https://www.onshape.com/ It is a cloud based app so there a no files to install and apparently if can be run on almost any device. It is relatively new but looks to have most features that will get you started to see if 3D cad is right for you. One catch is that all your work is also on the cloud and the free version is limited to 10 files (up to 100MB) being private, but you can also make your work public with unlimited files up to 5GB. The free version is not feature crippled and apparently is exactly the same operationally as the professional version which has a monthly fee and no private file quantity or size restrictions. Namerow Posted March 13, 2016 Share #12 Posted March 13, 2016 Nice job. Do you think that the plastic material used for your 3D printer is going to make your repro choke and throttle-lever knobs more (or less) robust than the breakage-prone originals? Can you post a close-up of those two pieces?
