Fan blades

Hi guys, I have a 71 z with a 3.1 stroker f54 block. my radiator is a Motorsport auto 3 row copper. I want to use the stock metal fan shroud that I have.  I have collected several different fans and noticed that the fan clutch attachment points are diffrent depths on the fan. My question,

what year of fans set further back from the radiator. I want to buy a new fan and know that there are differences over the years. thanks for amy information .

When you "shroud" do you mean the little shield on the top?  That's not really a shroud.  Without a shroud you probably really want to be within a certain distance from the radiator to get good pull through the fins.

If you do have a shroud then I think that the blades typically sit in a certain spot to work most effectively.  Doesn't answer your question, but I'd guess that many of us could give you a number, but not many know if theirs is the furthest back.  You'd have to know everything that's out there to make that call.

I know the zx fans are closer to the radiator but have an extra blade. I tried putting a zx fan on my 240 and with the ac pulleys it hit the radiator. I think the zx fans mount to the clutch in the back instead of the front like 240s thru 280zs putting them closer to the radiator. Ive removed the a/c so I'm hoping I can run the 5 blade zx fan now. I'll know in a week or so when I get the motor back in. Previously I had a 280 3 row with a zx full shroud on my '72 240. Greatly reduced the temp. Also I will attach a belly pan on there somehow as it doesn't have one now. I have one off a 280z but will have to drill different holes to work on the 240. My expirence so far. LOL

Zed Head, yes I'm referring to the shroud not what I call the finger guard that's on top of radiator Thanks for the reply. After looking closer at my collection of fans I can see  2 diffrent fan clutch locations on the assortment of fans. I must  have a few zx fans and a few 72-78 fans. Looks like the zx fans are closer to the radiator, situseen I think your right. Thanks for the input,  hopefully between the 3 cord radiator the full fan shroud and a belly pan my stroker will not overheat in traffic.  Thanks guys.

Why not an electric fan instead with a shroud added for insurance?

Or adding louvered inspection lids to allow heat to escape?

A heat shield, a coated header or a wrapped header?

Increased the amount of oil being used?

Painted the block and valve cover black?

I too have a stroker (3.2L) in a 240 and I have done all this and more to control the temperature in my engine bay.

I've only seen plastic shrouds.  Is your metal shroud a factory option?  Or aftermarket?

Regardless, if you seal the back of the shroud to the fan effectively, the negative pressure inside the shroud will pull the air through the radiator.  You're basically building a vacuum chamber, evacuated by the fan blades.  The most effective pull would be with the blades set right at the edge of the back opening.  If you get the blades set far back, you'll want to set the shroud back to match.  Just saying, matching the shroud to the blades is the way to go.  A sealed shroud with the blades 6 inches away from the radiator would be better than an open-backed shroud with the blades an inch away.  You could actually create turbulence at the shroud exit and reduce flow by putting the blades too close to the radiator.

I have a full one piece steel shroud on my 7'70 that I ordered from my local Datsun dealer in 1979, it is part number 21475-E4100 and cost $68.35.  Too bad we it wasn't that easy today.

Mike

Strange that the parts book for the US and Canada doesn't indicate that the shroud is optional for the 240Z, but it does for the 260Z?
