American influence and money don't always bring out the best in people. After the US got out of Viet Nam, the Russians moved into some of the abandoned bases. The locals referred to them as "Americans without money". On a more pleasant note, there were plenty of other things to do in the PI and SEA that didn't involve the downtown bars. Later in my career, I did a little time at K.I, too. Cruise into Marquette for all you can eat Fish Fry Friday! I think just about every base I was at is now closed or turned over to the Guard or Reserve - Forbes AFB in Topeka, Chanute AFB in Rantoul, Richards Gebaur AFB near Kansas City, March AFB near Riverside, CA. Keesler AFB, near Biloxi, still appears to be open. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane - the '71 Z was with me for all except Chanute & Clark. I rotated back to Langley from Rhein Main in the fall of 74. The fuel crisis in Germany and America scared the crap outa' me. So I bought a new econocar, a Vega wagon. Boy was I wrong. No gas mileage outa that rust bucket, heck the engine was toast before the payment book. The thing is I saw my first up close look at a Z car in the squadron parking lot, a 260 Z. There are probably still drool marks in that parking lot 42 years later. The thing that still grates me is a new Z car then was less than $1000 bucks more. I was offered half of the Vega's purchase price on a new Z car. I wasn't able to endure a loss like that. not on AF pay, so I suffered for years with the Vega. I bought my first Z car in 84, a 82 280ZX Turbo, held onto that for 10 years. I still smile about those days! 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

BTW- I recent read a book (Runways & Races) detailing a cooperative in the early 1950s between Gen, LeMay/Air Force and the SCCA to have sportscar racing at air bases. Since many appear to be in less need of use, maybe they can get the races going again, but without the scandal they had. It's a shame not to put those mile-long runways to a good use.
