Headlight Switch Change

Recommended Posts

I have run into a problem with the headlight switch fitted to my 6/73 240z.

When the switch is actuated to position 1 the parkers and tail light illuminate, moving up to position 2, all existing lights are still illuminated, no low or high beam, no power to the fuse for the low and high beam lights either. Does anyone have a fix for this problem.

please help

Steve

Usually the contact points inside the combination switch get stuck with the age and all. if you can ( i did it ) take it apart without breaking it you can clean it inside and put it back in your car. Mine had the same symtoms as yours - I fixed it by ceaning the contacts inside and making them move easy again. Becareful not to drop the springs that hold the contacts in place.

Thanks Escanlon. Thanks Jeff.

This is why the site is so good because we have common issues we are all working through.

I new you would give me good direction as to where I should focus my fault finding and repair for this problem. I suspected the switch was at fault, as I had to do a night drive home 2 weekends ago so I used a toggle switch to jump power at the fuse box, supply this circuit with power and the lights and dipping switch worked as advertised. It is definitely primary power to the circuit that is my problem. I will work through the process and get back with my results

Thanks again

Steve

I carried out a repair to the headlight switch unit, lucky I was told to watch out for the springs and things, they fell out.

I cleaned up the plates re-lubed and set the spring units back up greased the two switch plate tracks and re-assembled. felt good and rolled through the positions nicely. caried out installation connected the wiring and hey presto my lights work in all advertised modes. refitted all the plastics re-checked packed up my tools, happy.

zed operational again
