I'd change the fuel filter. If that doesn't work take it back to the mechanic as he did play around with the fuel system.

I'll ring tomorrow see if he has an explaination or perhaps a suggestion. Then the filter (needs replacing anyway so no loss there) and we'll go from there.

Why not change the filter first, then if not fixed, call the mechanic? If it hasn't been changed in a while, it probably needs it, and is VERY cheap, and easy to replace.

Rule #1: Do the simple things first, then complicate your life.

My money's on the fuel filter. I had a similar experiance in the red zed, only this occured more than once.

Eventually, I had to drop the tank and flush it out to remove all the crap that was coming out of it.

FWIW, you should be able to see petrol thru the filter, from your description it's sounding pretty clogged up.

I'd try to replace the fuel filter first (they're cheap enough). See how she runs and if you still have a problem - take it stright back to the mechanic. Afterall, you have a repeatable problem that occured after he worked on the car.

When you take the old filter out, open it up and see if it has any crud inside.

I'm glad you made it home the other weekend - I would have felt terrible if you'd got stuck halfway between the airport and the gold coast!

Yup, still lookin! I'm increasingly certain that the car I buy will not be one advertised in the papers/internet. It will be a word-of-mouth or chance find... I'm going to Melbourne in a couple of weeks, I'll be keeping my eyes open...

$10 gets you a new fuel filter.

The oil coming from the pump just indicates that the seal inside was a goner letting oil get out the little relief hole at the bottom of the pump.

I also wonder if any of the crud (if that is the problem) got through into the carbys. There is another small filter in there as well.

Start at the fuel filter and work your way from there. I would slice it open to see what was in it (carefully of course). If you have a see through filter it should look like a nice Tooheys New Beer.

Could be worth a phone call to the mechanic if the filter does not solve the problem:disappoin

If the mechanic you took it to was on the Gold Coast and he runs a green Z and a white 1600, then you can't go wrong with him. He gets those 2 cars motoring along so he definitely knows his business.
