IGNORED

No Spark

Recommended Posts

Trying to reassemble my 260Z installed a Crane XR 700 ignition and PS 20 coil using OEM ballast resistor the car will crank but not start. Earlier with the stock coil I had a weak spark but nothing to the plugs now nothing. Connected red wire to + yellow to - and black is secured to the coil bracket. The LED flashes when I crank so that part is correct but I still have two wires off the ballast resistor. What I need to know is which wire goes where because I tried several now this car ran before and we were about to do a V8 transplant so we took everything out of the engine bay. That plan fell through and now after several months I am trying to remember where everything plugs in. For some reason my spark was not getting to the plugs even when it was weak. I am trying to get a photo of a stock 260Z engine bay showing the coil and resistor wiring I must be overlooking something simple.

Willy-nilly wire connecting will damage parts.  Hope you didn't damage the XR700 box.  Red positive, yellow negative is a positive ground application according to the instructions.  You're hooked up backward.  Our cars are negative ground.

I would get a meter and read the instructions (attached).  Use the meter to confirm which wires have power when the key is On and which have power when the key is at Start.

I should apologize, I didn't understand what Crane was showing in their instructions.  Added a another picture from their manual.  Apparently yellow negative, red positive is how negative ground systems are connected also.

I had an electronic GM HEI module go bad and it produced a spark, but it was a weak orange spark.  Not strong enough to ignite the fuel-air mixture.  Could be that your Crane box has gone bad.

You can see the Run/On, and Start wires in their diagram.  At least get a meter and confirm that you have those wires connected to coil positive.

I found my shop manual CD so I have the wire legend for color coding and connections from ballast resistor and I have another Crane module so I will rewire as listed install another XR700 and see what happens. It was running before we ripped it down the shop had her for a year and finally closed down so we had to tow her back and try to figure out what goes where. I still have Crane instruction paperwork so I will try again because the exciter ring inside is being picked up by the photoeye because the LED flashes on the module. Thanks guys
