Speaker Panel from MSA

Has anyone used this speaker panel from MSA? Does it work well?

Surely you'd just knock that one up in the back shed from a sheet of MDF, and whack a layer of carpet on it if it worked well?

However has anyone used the removable pod style speakers you see on some parcel shelves?

TOG, I have one and it looks pretty good. Not sure that it's worth the money though... but I'm one of those people that can't make a straight cut in a board with a table saw... so I took the easy way out.....

Only problem I had fitting mine in, was the holes were just off enough that I had to do a little filing to slot them as I couldn't get one screw to start. After I got that done, it goes in and out easily...

$149.95 for a speaker box I dont know about the fit or how good it is made but the price is far to high IMO.

The other thing is that bass port in this box. Note there is only one. This means that your speakers are going to share the same air inside the box. The only time this will work well with speakers is if you are running mono not stereo.

If you are looking for a good box set for 6X9s buy the smaller sealed box's made for them. You can find these at most car stereo shops for a bit over $20.00 for the pair.

Another one I have seen.

Take the doors off the tool boxs in the rear floor. Use them as a pattern and cut your own doors with speaker holes. Then cover them with with what you like. Just make sure your speaker covers(grills) can take some blows without hitting your speakers.

Bang you now have new sealed speaker boxs in your Z with no loss of space. Done proper it will look stock for the non-zed head.

Cheers. That's the kind of criticism I was looking for. Also, how would you be able to get to the spare tyre? Wouldn't the box get in the way??? Keith?

I agree it is pretty expensive but if it looks neat...

I don't particularly like backyard jobs unless my father is involved. He's one of those Jack-of-all-trades that freaks me out every time he picks up a tool.

Anyhoo, I've got this idea for an angled sub box that uses a rear strut bar for support. I'll get some pics when I eventually get around to doing it. But before I do that I'll need a strut bar won't I. Why do I bother trying to save money:disappoin

Ah, I've seen that done - had 2 15" subs there, riiight behind the occupants. Would be crazy, huh?

I dont exactly remember how it was set up (I was more interested in the rust and mechanics of the car as I was looking to buy it) but it was very nicely done indeed. Used the rear strut housing things as tie-down points, and could be removed easily.

I would recommend it as not only will there be less chance of distortion (not as far for the sound to go) but it wont decrease your boot space much. And I guess it would act as a strut brace too to a certain extent..

But my 6x9s are just fine the way they are

It would be a propper strut brace Lachlan so it'll be good either way. What I like about it is, it'll create a proper boot space (kinda) by making the back of the box join the floor at a 90deg angle and have the other side obtusely angled (speaker face). Hopefully the distortion will get cut down considerably.

carguyinok, i've already got the speakers set in the tool boxes. Bought the car like that but I'll be looking at improving that set up somehow. It's too basy atm. I've got my bass down to -3 and it's still too much.

There is no problem getting to the spare as the speaker panel only sets out maybe an extra inch further than the stock plastic panel.

It would be easy to make with a 1/2 sheet of 1/2" plywood.. just have to get the dimensions correct. If you have someone that is good with woodworking, they could probably make one up in an hour or so, then all you'd have to do is drill the holes, cut out for the speakers and cover it.

If it's too bassy for you NOW why are you looking at subwoofers and huge enclosures right behind your head?

You might be just better off getting 6x9s like me and perhaps some tweeters up front (can mount them behind the air vents IIRC) and you'll be set up. What kind of speakers/stereo/amp(?) are you running now?

Oii, that was below the belt. I'm pretty fragile atm as I'm turning a quarter of a century on Friday and everyone has been teasing me about getting old.

It's too bassy in a bad way Lachlan. There's just too much low frequency.

Atm, I've got whatever the car came with when I bought it. A Pioneer deck with a couple of Pioneer 6" (?) speakers in the tool compartments.

I built a box like the one that MSA sells. I improved on that design by enclosing the back and creating separate boxes for each speaker. It only cost $22.00 to build and about an hours worth of time. Looks and sounds great.

although the speaker panel is "nifty " tp some people peopel when you think about a soundstage it really aint that great an idea, ive been trying to work out a pod or hlcd arrangement, the spare tire well is gonna be my sub enclosure
