I finally got around to painting my TL finisher panels and license plate light, here's how it turned out.  I'm quite pleased with the results.

 

Here is a pic comparing the new color to an unrestored original hubcap:

 

And one comparing the same hubcap with my unrestored original grill and a license plate light body painted in the new color:

It looks great!  You can see some spotting on mine.  Maybe if wasn't using the flash they wouldn't have shown up so obvious?

I do think the Dupli-Color you found is better for what we're doing.  The next one I paint will be with the "Ford color Dark Shadow Gray".

My red one is a lot different looking.  It had already been painted when I bought the car.

Thanks @siteunseen and @psdenno for the nice comments.  Also just want to mention that the DC color Dark Shadow Gray does have a small amount of fine metallic that can be seen in the sun, but after I applied the matte clear it is virtually unnoticeable.

Thanks Richard. Just to clarify, the hubcaps in my pictures are are OE and unrestored. I just used them for comparison of color and finish with the tail light surrounds, that I did paint. I only wish I could restore hubcaps to that level.

Just to expand on the hub cap topic, as everyone can see from CanTech's photo, the hubcaps of the era are quite complex, with bits and strips of chrome spread over larger areas of paint.  I'm trying to replicate that.  My 'caps have been chromed and I'm masking all the areas that should remain as chrome as we move to the paint stage.  Each hubcap takes me close to 45 minutes with tape and a sharp knife.  With that in mind I have to wonder how those hubcaps were originally created at the factory. Hard to imagine Datsun taking that much time masking everything, and do such a precise job of it.  I've never worked in a factory, so I would be interested in hearing the thoughts of others on how such a persnicity, apparently time-consuming job would fit into an assembly line.

My caps are apparently a bit newer that CanTech's and include a chrome rim around each of the five vent openings.

Can you post a pic of your hubcaps after taping, but before paint? I must be missing some detail because I don't see the bits and strips of chrome you are working on.

The original paint looks like a big "gangster whitewall" type of ring to me.
