sweatybetty Posted May 17, 2016 Share #1 Posted May 17, 2016 So, while re-wiring my 72, i found that both the ignition switch and the lock cylinder are bad. After looking at all the vendors and ebay it seems they all sell the same chinese re-pops. The lock cylinders dont have the correct keys. But, alas, there is hope!!! Standard part # US-169L and US120, and both are available. I should have them tomorrow from my local parts store and i will update in my rebuild thread. amazon has them both here http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=sx_as?keywords=ignition+switch&rh=n%3A15684181%2Ck%3Aignition+switch&qid=1463494332&vehicle=1972-67-2284-20-----14492------1-
Patcon Posted May 17, 2016 Share #2 Posted May 17, 2016 Or you could contact one of the members parting cars. There are three currently I believe. I usually feel old used is better than new cheaply made...
Terrapin Z Posted May 17, 2016 Share #3 Posted May 17, 2016 Or even some of us that are not currently parting cars have that part available as well. Japanese not Chinese......
Captain Obvious Posted May 18, 2016 Share #4 Posted May 18, 2016 Not trying to take business away from anybody, but an ignition switch isn't something I would buy used. Datsun didn't use a relay to handle the current for the starter solenoid and this is what happens inside:
Terrapin Z Posted May 18, 2016 Share #5 Posted May 18, 2016 Well, the Ignition switch is one of those that you can't take apart, clean up and reassemble. So it is hit or miss if they will work or not. To each their own on new or used I suppose. In opposition to Capitan Obvious, My 45 year old Ignition switch works just fine. Not all of them will end up like the one above. perhaps there was another issue with the starter and/or solenoid / wiring / misuse that caused this? Not trying to plug my part for sale, I really don't care about that. I am with Patcon and would prefer a used original over a Chinese replacement. They can't all be burnt, Just saying. sweatybetty Posted May 18, 2016 Author Share #6 Posted May 18, 2016 I do not know yet where they are made but i will find out tomorrow. The ignition switch has a short in the start circuit, and the key pulls out of the lock in any position. I have always had good luck with Standard brand. Terrapin Z Posted May 18, 2016 Share #7 Posted May 18, 2016 Standard motor parts are decent, I have bought some in the past. They used to have a top quality line for some items that were supposed to be a better quality than their standard pieces. Not all parts were offered in the duel lines. As you probably know the part shown above wont help with the keys pulling out, just the electrical contacts. US-120 Standard does offer the tumbler with keys too. US-169L The Standard parts also come with a 3 yr / 36K warranty too, can't go wrong with that. Hope it all works out good for you Sweaty.
