Is this acceptable?

Would you accept this zinc chromate plating?  Maybe i m\isunderstood what this service is. Are you just paying for the plating or plating + metal finishing?

I had these professionally plated and they came back looking like this. As you can see there are very obvious grinder marks that show thru. At  the very least a DA sander would have

improved the look of this.

Finish coatings are thin and generally will not hide surface flaws such as scratches and pits. Most finishing shops don't perform any polishing prior to the finishing you ask for. My experience with finishing is: You get out what you put in.

A plating shop would probably just do a degrease then a plating dip.  Electroplating is all about filling cracks and crevices for corrosion resistance, usually.  You'd have to see the service description to know what they were offering.

The plating finish looks really good, the problem is someone took some sort of grinding tool to it.   The plater can only plate what is given to him.  If it was me I would have sanded down the area and then polished it out the best I could to get rid if the grind marks before I would have sent it to the plater. Even after the sanding and polishing you would still see the scuff marks after plating.

Those grinder marks were done by the plater not me

I printed up some stickers and it covers some of the grinder marks.  Going to be buying my own plating kit so I have more control

over the process.

Well here is the finished radio. Except for the 2 bottom pieces it turned out pretty good.  Still can't replicate the nice plastic chrome that the factory did. I used model paint called chrome silver and covered it with a clear coat. It's passable. Anyone have better results with chrome paint?

Plastic connectors I got online at vintageconnections.com
