Just got my bumper pieces back from chroming and wow they look great. New rubber also. I paid $650.00 to have it done. Not sure if its a good or bad price but maybe it can be a reference for anyone else thinking about it. it was local plating company and they have good references. I'll have to wait until this winter to shell out for the front.

Looks very nice, this is one of the things on my to do list.  How does the plating on the inner surfaces look, did you need to add any other protection there?

Also are the rubbers strips new? If so where did you get them? Mine are getting quite dried out and cracked.

Now I don't feel so bad about shelling out $2,000 for two sets of front & back stainless steel bumpers.

Looks nice with the fresh chrome.

The inner side of the bumper had a fair amount of rust in spots, some heavy pits and you can still see them for sure but its  plated also, just not full on chrome. I took the bumper as a whole to have them check it out first and he said there was enough metal to make it work. Pretty much destroyed the studs on the old rubber taking them offf they were rusted so badly. I bought new ones from zcardepot. I thought about the stainless but I don't know if you can get the bumperettes and figured I'd keep the originals on it. Either way its a chunk of dough!!

No bumperettes on the stainless, but it still looks nice. You can delete the rubber strip, too, but I opted to keep it.

That seems to be a standard price these days for a good plating job. A lot of the people these days are sealing up or painting the inside of the bumper black to ensure it it doesn't rust again. I know they cleaned the rust off and chromed the inside as well but it will not be as thick as the outer surface and is easy to forget about cleaning in there, just a thought.

Just had my bumper re-done in Australia, haven't seen it yet or collected so no photos yet. Price was $550 AUD for the rear bumper + overriders. I opted for the stock bumper to be re-done as the quality seems to be better than many of the aftermarket ones and the chrome quality seems to be better done also. I've heard horror stories of reproductions rusting in short order.

I'm wondering where you sourced the rubber strips from? I will be getting some for front+rear and the overriders. Think I'll run them although like the clean look without also.

Going to paint the inside with Black KBS Rust Seal, similar to POR-15 you guys have over there. That should protect it.

Was it Tri-City in TN? They're good and affordable. I had them do the bumpers on my 1970 Road Runner and a couple years ago they did a set of 240Z bumpers. The cost was about $700 to have the pair done. Now that new bumpers are available for the Z I'd call Dave at FutoFab and but a new set for $700.

Yes - Tri - City is approx 1 hour from my hometown -they do an exceptional job. I'm betting the re-plated old bumper is far better than a new one.  Interesting to compare weights and quality of chrome

 

 

Having bumpers chrome plated is an adventure as I found out when I had my Avanti bumpers plated some years ago.  First you have to find a shop that still does plating.  They're becoming as rare as drive-in theaters.  The first couple places I went to asked what kind of car the bumpers were from....I suppose to judge rarity and to base the price estimate accordingly.  It shouldn't cost more to dip a '63 Jaguar XKE bumper than a bumper from a '66 Chevrolet four door sedan, but I bet it does.  I ended up leaving my bumpers at a place in Los Angeles where the counter guy said, "I see you got an Avanti bumper there." as I walked into the shop.  As for the Z, the stainless steel reproductions seem like an interesting alternative when the time comes.

I suppose the reason they asked what car it's off is probably due to a couple of things.

1. The size and shape of the bumper. The more curved it is and the more intricate the design the more expensive to repair. Think of those classic cadillac bumpers that take up the entire nose cone of the car.

2. Rarity, if something is lost, damaged or destroyed they want to know what sort of money it may cost them to find a replacement. So it's a kind of insurance charge for doing the work..

Compared to other bumpers the ones on an S30Z are relatively small and thin.
