Type "B" Transmission Production Dates

Recommended Posts

I have a 5/71 240 that had "series 1" style center console fitment issues because the shift lever kept touching the front of the console.  I found later that  the transmission was replaced with the later Type B transmission.

When was the Type B transmission in production?  Was it '72 up to the last 280z's in 1978?

Thanks

Gary

mj,

The link doesn't tell you very much and the PDF doesn't open.  The Nissan Model S30 Parts Catalog for USA and Canada lists the F4W71a (with final drive 3.364) 32010-E4650 up to 8/71.  The F4W71b - 32010-E8850 replaces the a type from 9/71.  Then, two transmission listings, 32010-E8851 and E8852 also noted as F4W71b are noted up to 6/72  They also have a 3.364 final drive.  From 7/72, the F4W71B 32010-N3300 was installed.

Yes absolutely.  The problem is now that I know I have the later B transmission, I am not sure what year car it came from.  Since there were so many later model transmissions, if I need a new clutch for example, I suspect I will need to be able to identify which year the donor car was.

The year of car or transmission, does not matter to clutch parts.  The clutch fork pivot ball is in the same location on all of the B type transmissions.  The throwout bearing collar (the casting that carries the throwout bearing and has the ears that the clutch fork ride on) has to match the pressure plate.  That's the most important thing.  You shouldn't try to buy a clutch using year of car on these old vehicles.  Know what size flywheel you have, and buy a clutch kit for that flywheel.

The main reason to know your transmission is for the gear ratios and replacement parts.  There are several combinations out there.
