Posted September 13, 20168 yr comment_503091 Almost done my suspension rebuild, but I'm halving problems fitting the 4 outer half shaft bolts. I bought new nuts and bolts and It seems they are a tapered or friction fit. I panted the flanges with por 15 and it may be causing problems as the bolts seem very tight. If I file off the paint how hard should they be to drive in? Thanks, Steve Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/56171-outer-half-shaft-bolt-fit-question/ Share on other sites
September 13, 20168 yr comment_503092 They're about a zero tolerance fit. So, yes, paint in the hole would be a problem. But they should slide in, no pounding necessary. September 13, 20168 yr Author comment_503110 Great thanks. Neither the new or the old wanted to go in. As I recall they did take a bit of work to get out but I attributed that to being in place for 40+ years. I will clean them up and see if I can get them to go in with out using my "persuader" Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/56171-outer-half-shaft-bolt-fit-question/#findComment-503110 Share on other sites
September 13, 20168 yr comment_503112 I've used rifle barrel cleaning brushes mounted in a drill motor to clean those bolt holes. Many sizes to choose from and they're cheap. Slid right in with only a little resistence. Perfect, glad to have my Z back on her feet again! Now I just need a friend to come over and help me bleed the brakes. Did it with the wife once and we didn't talk for a week Edited September 14, 20168 yr by sdyck spelling error Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/56171-outer-half-shaft-bolt-fit-question/#findComment-503158 Share on other sites
September 14, 20168 yr comment_503167 My "friend" in the past has been a broken shovel handle. Loosen the bleeder, press the pedal down and wedge the handle against the seat back, tighten the bleeder, let the pedal back up. Seems to work.
