1978 280z engine component??

Hello all, Can someone please tell me what this is and what it does?  I was troubleshooting a vacuum line issue with my defroster and stumbled upon this. It has a  line going into it but then nothing coming out of it.   The line going into this doesn't connect to anything either.  It terminates near the vacuum bottle canister on the passenger side.  Any help would be great.  Thanks

S30 Driver,

Im looking for one that Works electrically. I have a 1972 240z and would like to mess with vaccum issues. Which one would you recommend? For example i set my idle speed to 1000RPM. Once i turn the AC on i want the idle to stay there and not to drop to 800 RPM.

Sorry to interrupt your line of questioning, but help me understand what you're trying to do.  I'm having a little trouble understanding your idle speed issue. 

Idle should be 800 RPM without AC.  When aftermarket AC is installed on a Z, it's recommended to raise idle RPM to 1000.  That's because it will drop to around 800 RPM (optimum RPM) when the AC compressor kicks in.  If one were to NOT raise it to 1000 RPM when installing AC, idle would drop to around 600 RPM for a no bueno driving experience.

I know you have a non-stock cam and other modifications on your car.  What was idle set at when you got the car and before AC was installed....1000, 800, somewhere in between? 

A Z is supposed to be fun to drive and after reading about the problems you've experienced with your Z for years, I have to ask.  Do you have an exit plan for this car?

Engine idle speeds should remain within manufacturers specs even with performance modifications with very little wiggle room. Idling at a higher RPM obviously burns more fuel but in addition you may develope driviability issues with lots of unburned fuel depositing. Suggestion......get rid of the A/C or only drive on cooler days which may mean you won't drive much living in Panama. I live in Florida and not having A/C is not an issue for me. Good luck.
