Hello all, 

 

 I have now literally spent over $1000 on every available door weatherstrip I can get my hands on  from genuine Nissan to every aftermarket I can possibly think of. Welt attached to the rubber,  genuine separate welt, genuine welt with rubber and they all suck.  I can get them on but my door will not close.  The door is not a problem, I've adjusted, the latch mechanism is all new OEM parts and nothing works. The door closes perfectly with only the welt but any rubber and it's game over.

 

if I can get this to work I'm literally going to sell my car.  I would rather rebuild an engine with only having a screwdriver then do this ever again.

Kia weatherstrips?

If you do a search on weatherstrip in the forum archive, you'll see that the most frequently noted problem is "doors don't close".  You'll also see that the solution for that phenomenon is to let the car sit in the sun for a few days with the doors closed after installing the new weatherstripping.  The weatherstrip will compress and conform to the size/shape of the opening. 

I experienced the problem with weatherstrip from MSA.  Couldn't slam the door hard enough to make it latch shut.  A couple days outside in the summer heat and the seals conformed and enabled the door to close tightly without slamming.

On the other hand, as Patcon mentioned above, Kia weatherstripping from a junkyard is reported to work first time, every time, for those who use it.  Cheap, too.

I struggled with this issue and will tell you what worked for me.  

As my car was to be restored to completely stock, OEM, NOS

weatherstripping and welting needed to fit correctly.  

If you do a search for "door weatherstip", there is a large amount 

of discussion archived.

Two things that worked for me were, first loosen the door latches 

to the point where the door would latch just short of slamming

it closed.  Next, liberally apply a vinyl and rubber dressing such as

Armorall almost to the point of soaking.  It helps if these tasks are

done in warm weather.  Leave the doors in this loosened comdition

for several weeks until you notice the doors begin to close more

easily as the weatherstrip takes a set.  From there, progressively

 Adjust the latches with continued liberal use of the armorall until

the doors close normally.  This may take a couple more adjustment.

my doors now "thunk" like a Porsche.

Good luck.

Throw them in the garbage and get yourself a set from a Kia Sportage at the wreckers, perfect fit, the same weatherstrip works well on the rear hatch as well.

Chris is right- Kia Sportage door seals.

i tried everything ( well almost) , for years on my car. Installed Kia seals and just couldn't believe it. I had read the posts and wish now that I had tried it earlier. They work that good

Thanks for the feedback. I'm really trying stay original. I am waiting for one last try with a new OEM weather strip that uses the Factory welt separately and see what happens. I've only tried the original that has the welt attached to the rubber.

I will try armorall and silicone spray as suggested. Basically it only closes if I only use the welt or no welt at all. It closes with one finger no effort and clinks perfectly like a brand new Lexus. Issues arise when any rubber introduced. The door and latch is lined up and worked prior to my attempting to renew the driver weatherstrip.

While I continue researching this further, what year Kia Sportage are people using? I've read about this before but I keep seeing the same suggestion and referencing the junkyard but no year or new Dealer part number.

This is the KIA Sportage seal that @rossiz ordered from Korea and had great luck with it.

I did use the factory weatherstrip with the separate weltimg.  I, also, did not use any adhesive

as the welting does a nice job of holding it all together on the pinch weld.

Thank you all for helping out. I'm going to attempt the OEM separate Welt/Rubber then go with the KIA option if it does not work out.
