JDM optional map light

I just happen to have a roof panel lying around. This all you are going to have up front I believe. The three holes are for the base of the mirror. I am just guessing but I bet the base that is missing comes all the way forward and replaces the existing mirror base using the three mounting screws

If whiteheadperformance is were you have found the Map light, give them a call. Mike have a big interest in jdm parts so he should know that the base is missing. Maybe they have the base to ? Would be strange if the sell an item thats not complete.

I asked Mike (twice!!!) for pictures of the front and back of the light before buying it and he simply never got around to sending them even though he said he would. Too busy, I guess. I bought it anyway but will return it if I'm not satisfied with the condition or is missing parts that I can't fabricate.

That's a pretty good guess. Makes fabricating a base a bit more involved!

What manual is that page from?

Thank you so much. Other than in pics, have you (or anyone) ever seen it in a car?

It's from the tenth Nissan 'Service Shuho' booklet for the Japanese market S30-series Z. It covers the S31 and GS31 models.

I've seen one in a car (of course), but it's also depicted in the sales catalogues for the S31 model range:

Tried to look at the brochure in an editor but not enough resolution to really tell how it installs.

Glad you already bought it. I was gonna PM you to suggest you do that before someone undercut you. Most regulars here wouldn't but you never know who's "lurking"...

From the factory parts manual:

Helpful drawing and seems to show that there's no additional base or plate for attaching to the roof. It would seem that the 2 screws shown go through the roof liner into what must be metal ??? Anyway,  my maplight arrived yesterday and my daughter sent me some pics that show it at different angles (I won't be home for another couple of weeks). Not good quality pics but they give a better idea of the overall shape.

I've also written Mike at Whitehead Performance again asking for information regarding installation of the light. Maybe he'll find some time to respond.

I believe you are right. As far as I'm aware, the two screws thread into captive nuts hidden behind the headliner.

It related only to the mid/late '76-up S31 and GS31 'Fairlady ZT' models, and - you never know - those captive nuts might well be ready and waiting on your late '280Z' too. Hopefully that will be the case...
