goldmember Posted November 17, 2016 Share #1 Posted November 17, 2016 Where or who do you guys recommend to get a rebuilt 5 speed transmission from. Looking for an 81-83 zx, I think. the close ratio with the 1: 0.75 5th gear ratio. Any recommendations for me? i have a 74 260z that I want to upgrade.. thanks, billy
siteunseen Posted November 17, 2016 Share #2 Posted November 17, 2016 I believe this is where @Zedyone_kenobi found his. It wouldn't go into gear and they talked him through the fix over the phone, IIRC. Looked really good too. http://www.zcarsource.com/manual-5-speed-turbo-t-5-transmission-280zx-81-83-rebuilt_8_56430_197417.html
Zed Head Posted November 17, 2016 Share #3 Posted November 17, 2016 You're unlikely to find a place that has rebuilt 5 speeds "in stock". Your best route will probably be to find a decent used one and take it to a shop that knows what's what. And that 5th gear would be a .745. .75 would come from your rounding method, which can vary depending on profession.
Zedyone_kenobi Posted November 17, 2016 Share #4 Posted November 17, 2016 Your memory is amazing. Yes, I bought my Z transmission through them. They were very good about helping me after the sale as well.
goldmember Posted November 17, 2016 Author Share #5 Posted November 17, 2016 Ok thanks, I'll give that place a call. Has anyone purchased a rebuilt transmission from Californiadatsun.com before? He has them for sale on eBay...
rcb280z Posted November 18, 2016 Share #6 Posted November 18, 2016 You might want to google them "California Datsun" and read what people say. Used to be called Datsun parts LLC.
goldmember Posted November 18, 2016 Author Share #7 Posted November 18, 2016 Ok, I'll check them out. I'm assuming that can't be a good thing.

Zed Head Posted November 19, 2016 Share #11 Posted November 19, 2016 CaliforniaDatsun is a gamble. That''s the problem. If you get a bad part he makes it very difficult to make it right. You got lucky. If you're a gambler, go for it.
jonathanrussell Posted November 20, 2016 Share #12 Posted November 20, 2016 I am pretty sure Eiji at Datsun Spirit rebuilds transmissions...and at least when I visited him a few years ago he had a few in stock ready to rebuild.
