January 12, 20178 yr comment_510080 Line bore (crank), machine the deck, ARP main bolts and verify piston to wall gap (the wrong assumption regarding expansion caused us a set of new in the box custom pistons that were from the parts we got from BSR) I want to say most but will settle for many L-series engine don't make peak HP or torque over 7000rpm so there is no reason to wind out your new engine to redline with every shift. January 12, 20178 yr comment_510082 Stock camshaft gear will probably give you enough adjustment . What little you gain from the gasket might be offset by any decking of the head. Might just fall in timing on #1 markSent from my iPhone using Classic Zcar Club mobile Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/56751-l28-stroker-build-i-need-your-advice/?&page=4#findComment-510082 Share on other sites
January 16, 20178 yr Author comment_510392 Bad news... the crankshaft is bent. Around 0.02" (0.5mm) runout. I'll send it to a specialist, he might be able to fix it. EDIT: Runout was 0.17mm Edited February 4, 20178 yr by german240 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/56751-l28-stroker-build-i-need-your-advice/?&page=4#findComment-510392 Share on other sites

I have a friend who got bit by the bent LD28 crankshaft, possibly more than once. I think he stopped trying to get LD28 crankshafts. January 16, 20178 yr comment_510396 At least mine came from a car I owned and was driving - purred like a kitten Sent from my iPhone using Classic Zcar Club mobile Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/56751-l28-stroker-build-i-need-your-advice/?&page=4#findComment-510396 Share on other sites
January 16, 20178 yr Author comment_510397 The seller claims that the car from which he pulled the crank was running, too. Could be a transport damage. Let's see what the specialist says! January 17, 20178 yr comment_510410 I took one of my cranks in to my crank shaft shop I think it was bent about .005" or so but wasn't "straight". They didn't bat an eye, evidently is it not uncommon to see cranks that are not straight. It should be able to be straightened if they can determine where it was bent. If I had to guess I would say it got dropped from a standing position or was thrown during shipping. If they try to straighten it, then it needs to be crack checked really well Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/56751-l28-stroker-build-i-need-your-advice/?&page=4#findComment-510410 Share on other sites
January 17, 20178 yr comment_510413 Monroe talks about straightening bent crankshafts using a dull chisel in his Rebuild book. Apparently it's a simple, common procedure. His point was "don't worry about those chisel marks" if you find some on your crankshaft. I wouldn't even try it myself I have run cranks that have been straightened this way, with no problems. The poster's crank though has alot of bend unless he got his decimals wrong! You would need to straighten it exactly where it bent to get it right. I think it's definitely worth a try, otherwise it's scrap... February 4, 20178 yr Author comment_511816 Update: I got the crank back from the specialist. Now it is back to specs!! Before: 0.17mm (0.0066") runout After: 0.01mm (0.000393") runout All the main and rod journals are exactly at the lower wear limit. I'll use standard bearing shells then. I'm actually quite impressed how everything turned out! I also received a big package with Sean's (Zstory) stainless steel exhaust systems with sport/race equal lenght headers. The "muffler" looks quite nice I'm not worried about my car being to quiet anymore.
