Posted April 17, 200321 yr comment_34332 How hard is this conversion? The car is a '73 240Z with an auto tranny and I want to put in an early manual 5-speed. I know that the tranny swap is not too bad but how about the clutch pedel and linkages for it???I must get this answered quickly so any help would be great!! April 17, 200321 yr comment_34336 Well, it is not too hard to do actually, just a pain in the arse.PARTS LIST:TransmissionManual starterClutch kit (I suggest a Centerforce) MSA sells themPedals - both the brake and clutch (I have a set)Flywheel with bolts (I have that too)Clutch Master Cylinder (bolts right in)Slave cylinderrubber line to slave cylindermedal hydraulic linepilot bushing for the crankshaft (autos did not get one)I do not know if the driveshaft is interchangeable???Also the rubber boot for the shifter and actually the center console is different, but I just made me a custom outer shifter boot. Works great and is a BUNCH cheaper than a new console. That is most of it from the top of my head. Let me know if you need any more help. Also I am in San Antonio (not too far from you) if you need visual help. April 17, 200321 yr comment_34337 HiI did this conversion about 2 years ago. The only real pain is switching from gas/brake pedal to gas/brake/clutch. You have to change the 'bracket' that they attach to as the one for automatic trannies won't work. It's a pretty tight fit, especially working upside down, if you don't take the dash out first. But other than that it's a pretty easy swap. The holes for the clutch master cylinder are already cut into the firewall (they have a cover over them) and the tranny will bolt right up. Of course you will have to install the hydralic line from the master cylinder to the slave cylinder, but again, the rubber supports are already there (holding the brake line). Good luck. If you run into any problems just write.Peter Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/5702-help-i-want-to-go-from-an-auto-to-manual/#findComment-34337 Share on other sites
April 18, 200321 yr comment_34393 I found that the bracket for the pedals worked fime for me . All I had to do is unbolt the old auto brake pedal and bolt in the new pedals.WORKED FINE IN MY 72 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/5702-help-i-want-to-go-from-an-auto-to-manual/#findComment-34393 Share on other sites

May 30, 200321 yr comment_39219 If you infact do make the swap, I am in need of a flex plate that has a good ring gear. My ring gear is damaged from god knows what. let me know either way if you would. thanks Gary:classic: Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/5702-help-i-want-to-go-from-an-auto-to-manual/#findComment-39219 Share on other sites
May 30, 200321 yr Author comment_39250 The deal on this car fell through. The seller did not have the title nor had he ever. The owner before him MAY have been the titled owner, but I do not know. After looking into this I decided that what was best for me was to have the current owner obtain the title. However, he must not want to get rid of the car that badly as he pretty much said that he had no time to do this and would just donate the car to charity. The joke is on him though, to my knowledge nobody will take a car without a title. So I'm sorry that I will not have any parts to pass on. But you may ask this guy, I bought the engine about a month ago and while I was there they pulled the auto tranny off it as I did not want it and had no need for it. He may still have the tranny and sell you the parts. I know that he was in need of the money do continue his V8 conversion. I am going to use an early 5-speed on my '78 280Z... so I won't be using any ZX parts or anything.. can i still use my original driveshaft from my automatic? January 8, 201411 yr comment_439236 I'm sorry for kicking this topic, but I have a problem with my swap..everything from the swap went fine, but I can't get the bushing in the crankshaft. it seems to be that the crankshaft is already the right size to fit the main transmission shaft without a problem.the bushing that I have is about 2-3mm to thick everywhere! could it be that I have another crankshaft? cause the inner diameter is exactly the same as the outer diameter of the transmission shaft, and it fits without any slop!
