I rebuild the steering rack and installed new OEM bushings on my 1972 240Z.  The passenger side seems nice and tight but the driver side seems to allow the rack to twist somewhat. I have installed the rack stop which only controls rotation in one direction.  Is some movement OK (there seems to be no real up or down movement) or should I apply  a shim under the bushing so it will provide better clamping.

Odd that new bushings don't fit snugly.  In the early 1970s, when Datsun dealerships with parts departments were a little harder to find, a common fix for a loose bushing was to slip a piece of bicycle inner tube between the worn rubber bushing and the metal clamping collar that secured it.  Shadetree maintenance at its best!

I have an old fuel tank strap rubber strap that I was thinking of using.  The width seems a good fit just seems to rotate a bit too easy.  It may also be do to the new smooth finish of the POR 15 that I used to paint the rack.

seems to me that there are two different sizes on a 72 are you sure you did not reverse them. There should be no play.

There are two sizes but they are not interchangeable.  The rubber seems to be a bit thinner than the ones I took out.  I think I will just shim it.

If you recently bought these new rubber bushings, you owe it to the community to share where your found  them.  These are pretty much in the unicorn category of replacement parts.  Thanks.

I found them at the dealership below,  but I think it was the last set back in Oct 2016.
