drunkenmaster Posted April 19, 2003 Share #1 Posted April 19, 2003 I have seen a 240Z which featured something similar to the thermo-tec adhesive heat shield along the underside of the transmission tunnel etc presumably to reflect the heat radiated from the exhaust.Anyone have opinions on whether something like the is worthwhile or saw justification to do this?I remember in an old Z i used to own the interior side of the transmission tunnel got quite warm. antipodalboy Posted April 22, 2003 Share #2 Posted April 22, 2003 Look into dynamat. they have some really nice metal backed reflective mat that can be installed in engine compartments to reduce heat through the firewall. It's not very cheap, but I have a good friend who puts it in all of his cars. HTHBlaine Stolpestad
sjcurtis Posted April 23, 2003 Share #3 Posted April 23, 2003 Drunkenmaster, If you run your exhaust in standard position you should not need heat shielding in the tunnel area as far as heat transfer in the tunnel area I think this would be minimal.I still run the bitumas compound under the tunnel vynil and a 2.5 inch system. I am not to concerned with heat transfer at this stage. As far as adding externall shielding I think this would be a mistake, it would be one more place to trap moisture and set up corrosion points.CheersSteve :classic:
Daniel Posted April 23, 2003 Share #4 Posted April 23, 2003 Being here deep in NASCAR country I have been to many open house parties that the teams have.I have always found it kinda funny that in this hi-tech world the majority of NASCAR teams use 1/4 inch plywood in the floorboard. It doesn't transfer heat and also does slight noise and floor vibration reduction according to those that build the cars. drunkenmaster Posted April 23, 2003 Author Share #5 Posted April 23, 2003 Thanks guys, I remember seeing it done on the "zbuild" (yellow 240z from zoom) and since I am stripping the underbody at the moment, anything I can do at the same time catches my interest.I dont really see it as necessary, but just wondering what other people thought.
