I'm guessing a telephone pole or light standard got in the way but it looks like the driver may have walked away from it.

The remnants of that white plastic sheet that is on the car, would that be something the Cops put on it to keep the traffic moving or maybe the tow truck driver to keep the broken glass from falling off?

It's used to hold everything together. Kinda like the stuff used in racing pits.

I was surprised the engine was not sitting in the passenger compartment.

With the rear tire like that it would be easy to parallel park.
