April 7, 20177 yr comment_517500 The sources I found give the same transmission gear ratios, but the differentials are different. http://www.zhome.com/ZCMnL/tech/GearRatios.html Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/57464-280zx-vs-280zx-22-transmissions/#findComment-517500 Share on other sites

April 7, 20177 yr comment_517502 Other than then 82/83 turbo's that got that silly BW 5 speed, all the NA cars have the same transmission within their years. The ratios in the first couple of years are different than the later ratio's, most notably the over drive. 82-83 5 speeds are the sweet spot all around. April 7, 20177 yr comment_517512 The clutch is bigger (240mm / 225mm) on the 2+2, but that really has no effect on the transmission itself.  Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/57464-280zx-vs-280zx-22-transmissions/#findComment-517512 Share on other sites

My understanding is that the percent variance between 79-80 and the 7/80- 6/83 is only 3%. Doesn't seem like, it would make a big enough difference in front of a 3.70 diff, to the extra cost to find one. April 7, 20177 yr comment_517526 Just keep ALL the bits from the 240 clutch wise (disk, plate, throwout, bearing sleeve) and it will bolt up and work. Don't use any of the stuff from the car with the trans you're using. I believe you use one clutch or the other. The throwout collar is different as well. You will need to address the shifter clearance at the tunnel opening. I am putting the same set up together myself. I just found a shifter that should work without having to trim anything out of the tunnel. I haven't tested it yet though. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/57464-280zx-vs-280zx-22-transmissions/#findComment-517527 Share on other sites

Looks like I anger theZ out of storage on Tuesday and can get started on the conversion while Keating delivery of the trans. April 8, 20177 yr comment_517549 I have a '79 2+2 transmission in my '72.  The ZX shifter wouldn't work with my console and boots. They are straight and my boots are angled toward the back. Some grinding of the '72 shifter worked for me. I put the 240 speedo cog in the ZX transmission, new oil seal around the speedo cable too. I like it. 75 @2,200rpm.
