The bushing in the ZX shifter is designed that way for NVH considerations, i.e. vibration isolation.

Right. After seeing that the base of your shifter is that sliding ZX thang and not the simpler fixed bushing style I wholeheartedly agree! 

So I am used to my series I 4 speed with a shortened shift lever. Tuesday I drove a friends 73 with the this same transmission and a shortened lever. Geez what a difference. Quick positive and so much better. Seems like it is worth making the swap just for that improvement. Guess things got better in those 13 years. Time to get it done
