Posted June 7, 20177 yr comment_522530 Replacing my rear transmission seal (it's a five speed-model FS5W71B. Seal is from Motorsport Seal Part Number 32136-U0100). Old seal disintegrated upon removal. Wondering if the inner metal ring (or band) should be removed as well (possible this is part of the old seal)? (see red arrow in pic around 2 0'clock). Thanks you! Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/57880-rear-transmission-seal-replacement/ Share on other sites
June 7, 20177 yr comment_522534 I think so. Â A quick test is to compare the diameter of the new seal with the hole it needs to fit in to. Better check your propeller shaft (aka driveshaft) slip yoke for damage. Â The seals have a steel spring to maintain tension and when the rubber goes the steel wears a groove in the slip yoke. June 7, 20177 yr Author comment_522540 Thanks for the quick reply Zed Head! Yes indeed that ring was part of the old seal... Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/57880-rear-transmission-seal-replacement/#findComment-522540 Share on other sites
June 7, 20177 yr Author comment_522541 And the new one installed (note to self, clean pilot used to drive seal and wipe seal before taking picture of installed new seal)! June 7, 20177 yr comment_522544 Be careful straightening your dust seal (the external metal with the ding in it). Â Don't pry too hard against the aluminum or use a drift pin and a hammer to knock it back in to shape. Â You might consider just removing it, Nissan did on the ZX's. Â The double seal was overkill, probably, or caused rubbing problems when bent, like you might have. June 7, 20177 yr comment_522545 Curious - did your driveshaft yoke get damaged? Â I have an old 240Z shaft with a groove worn in it, myself. June 7, 20177 yr Author comment_522546 I'll check but I do not recall any issues. Car has not been on the road since 1989....it was a low mileage rebuilt transmission so really hasn't much wear. Old seal was intact when I pulled it, just the rubber was falling apart as I tried to remove the seal.Sent from my XT1585 using Classic Zcar Club mobile Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/57880-rear-transmission-seal-replacement/#findComment-522546 Share on other sites
