GV Z Car Posted June 7, 2017 Share #1 Posted June 7, 2017 Replacing my rear transmission seal (it's a five speed-model FS5W71B. Seal is from Motorsport Seal Part Number 32136-U0100). Old seal disintegrated upon removal. Wondering if the inner metal ring (or band) should be removed as well (possible this is part of the old seal)? (see red arrow in pic around 2 0'clock). Thanks you!
Zed Head Posted June 7, 2017 Share #2 Posted June 7, 2017 I think so. A quick test is to compare the diameter of the new seal with the hole it needs to fit in to. Better check your propeller shaft (aka driveshaft) slip yoke for damage. The seals have a steel spring to maintain tension and when the rubber goes the steel wears a groove in the slip yoke. GV Z Car Posted June 7, 2017 Author Share #3 Posted June 7, 2017 Thanks for the quick reply Zed Head! Yes indeed that ring was part of the old seal...
GV Z Car Posted June 7, 2017 Author Share #4 Posted June 7, 2017 And the new one installed (note to self, clean pilot used to drive seal and wipe seal before taking picture of installed new seal)!
Zed Head Posted June 7, 2017 Share #5 Posted June 7, 2017 Be careful straightening your dust seal (the external metal with the ding in it). Don't pry too hard against the aluminum or use a drift pin and a hammer to knock it back in to shape. You might consider just removing it, Nissan did on the ZX's. The double seal was overkill, probably, or caused rubbing problems when bent, like you might have.
Zed Head Posted June 7, 2017 Share #6 Posted June 7, 2017 Curious - did your driveshaft yoke get damaged? I have an old 240Z shaft with a groove worn in it, myself.
GV Z Car Posted June 7, 2017 Author Share #7 Posted June 7, 2017 I'll check but I do not recall any issues. Car has not been on the road since 1989....it was a low mileage rebuilt transmission so really hasn't much wear. Old seal was intact when I pulled it, just the rubber was falling apart as I tried to remove the seal.Sent from my XT1585 using Classic Zcar Club mobile
