What do you mean by race the engine before checking the plugs? You're looking for a tan color plug in normal driving. June 23, 20177 yr Author comment_523788 Just opened the float chambers of both carbs. The level on both of them were wrong. I have set them to 9/16 as per ztherapy sheet. Cant believe they were that wrong. June 23, 20177 yr comment_523790 I was always told that you can't just let them sit & measure the 9/16". You need to blow through the float bowl hole (through the needle valve) and make the 9/16" when the valve closes. June 23, 20177 yr comment_523802 The fuel level would have been too high with the floats adjusted like the first picture. Which would mean you would need 2 1/2 turns or less. At 3 & 4 turns I would expect flooding issues Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/57947-fuel-mixture-or-jet-adjustment-nut-settings/?&page=3#findComment-523802 Share on other sites
June 26, 20177 yr Author comment_524033 Well im at 3.5 turns clockwise and this is how its burning the plugs. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/57947-fuel-mixture-or-jet-adjustment-nut-settings/?&page=3#findComment-524033 Share on other sites
June 26, 20177 yr comment_524034 There are devices to prevent too much vacuum on deceleration by limiting how fast the throttle valve will snap shut. It will pull oil past the rings and valve seals if it closes too fast at high rpms. I'm not sure if burning oil pops in the exhaust but it may be worth looking at. Have you installed the sight tubes on the float chambers to check the float level? In old post by @Bruce Palmer(Ztherapy), he says "Pull the chamber and piston. Look down at the top of the nozzle. The fuel level should be about 1/16" below the top of the nozzle for proper operation. Congratulations! It looks like progress to me. June 26, 20177 yr comment_524053 Mark make sure he understands the mixture knob. I turn mine CLOCKWISE until they are snug, then COUNTER CLOCKWISE to 2.5. I'm sure it's a typo but who knows?
