Mustache bar bushings

Recommended Posts

I wonder if the specialist company that rebuilds harmonic balancers (I've forgotten the name and location) would be interested in taking this on?  Same basic principal.  It's pretty clear that a solid urethane bush is not going to produce the same result as a webbed rubber bush.  And I don't think the serrated end washers were added by the Nissan engineers just becuase they looked cool.

The Motorsport store shows these bushings but they have been out of stock for a while. Are you expecting more or working on an aftermarket source for these?

Thanks, Charles

Nissan is completely out and we haven't found an aftermarket source yet.  We're hoping that our contacts in Japan may be able to find them.  The polyurethane kit is the only option we offer at this time.

Whitehead used to sell Whiteline low durometer PU bushings but it looks like they ran out of stock.  They removed the listing, with no reference (poor web site management) and other web sites show "out of stock".

Somebody just reported installing a set, but I can't find the thread.  It was recent.  He said they were quiet.

Thanks for the response. I am sure there is a market here for these. I don't think they would be overly hard to source. I don't want poly...

I agree with Namerow, the engineers didn't add the funny washers for no reason

There's a constant battle going on between engineers and materials people, and between design and manufacturing.  The Nissan design looks like a typical "make the cheapest material work" design.  Typical automotive principle.  Nothing wrong with it, it worked.  But it's a complex design so without the tooling, will be difficult to reproduce.

Whiteline's product looked promising, and the use of materials as the vibration damper instead of the design looks right..  I think that they just did a poor job of selling it.  I'll see if I can find that thread I mentioned.

Found it.  The Advanced Search engine of the site actually works pretty well!  Needs promotion.

Edit - found their site from the picture inthe other thread.  Looks like they just stopped making the mustache bar bushings.  Maybe they're falling apart?   Maybe MSA can be a supplier if they come back.

Total Z Parts shows to have 1 pair in stock - $105.  Yikes!

Zedd Saver - $100 for the pair.  Shows to be for 240z only but unsure if they work with 260z and 280z

Is this what the OP is looking for?  Are they wanted for factory correctness?  Why not go with the ES poly bushings?

I have 2 sets already and I paid $90 which includes shipping for the last pair. I don't want to run any poly if I can help it. I just don't think its necessary and would prefer not to risk squeaks or harshness. I was just trying to find out if they ever sourced some...

I was the one who installed the Whiteline bushings from WhiteHead. I ordered them 3-4 months ago and just got around to installing a couple weeks ago. I converted over from the pro-thane bushings and the Whiteline bushings did a good job of quieting things down.

As a back burner project under @Patcon's guidance, I've been looking into this off and on for a while.

The most promising bushings I've seen are things like engine torque strut mounts. The upper bar they strap on transverse mounted engines to keep the top of the engine from wretching around as the engine works. if you can't find something that has the exact same size as the original bushing, I muse that you could use something that is a little smaller than the stock bushing, and press it into a thin wall cylinder of appropriate ID and OD. Make the length of the cylinder long enough that there's extra material to swage over the mustache bar.

Here's some pics of common cheap bushings that are probably large enough to consider. I bet with a caliper at a junkyard you ought to be able to turn up something .100 or so smaller than the original. There's got to be something out there. Little smaller OD than stock. Same or larger bolt through the middle. Length shouldn't matter so much. Here's some possible candidates. Next time I'm headed to the yard, I'm going to take my caliper:
