Posted April 23, 200321 yr comment_34900 I wonder if this stereo I pulled from my parts car is an old after market or if it is a factory radio. The reason I wonder is because it is in good shape. With Plastic coating still on it. April 23, 200321 yr Author comment_34905 last one so I could be sure I gave enough info........ Now I will figure out if it works but I am not sure how to test it since I do not really see how to hook it up to some speakers. I guess they did things different back then Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/5805-is-this-an-original-factory-am-fm-stereo-8-track-for-73240z/#findComment-34905 Share on other sites
April 23, 200321 yr comment_34907 These were quite popular in the mid-70's. You stuck your 8 track cartridge in the player and you played all 4 tracks (2 ran simultaneously so you had stereo) and you listened to the whole album. Pretty nifty concept, same one used as the radio stations to play songs and commercials.Hardest thing you'll have with that is getting tapes to play in it.To hook it up, you've got the schematic on that decal on the chassis. Hook up a wire to the positive side of the battery and put that in the Red wire, then a black to chassis ground, and one wire each to the left and right speakers. The other terminal on the speakers goes to chassis ground.Whether it's the original or not? Could very well be.If you need any more info on the operation of it, I used to sell car stereos and can pretty much tell you what to look for.Enrique Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/5805-is-this-an-original-factory-am-fm-stereo-8-track-for-73240z/#findComment-34907 Share on other sites
April 23, 200321 yr comment_34908 I'm no expert, but that does not look like I remember my original radio, and I've never EVER heard of an 8 track radio being available in any version of 240Z from the factory. April 23, 200321 yr comment_34909 I can't tell from the pictures; what the brand name? Unless it's a Hitachi I would have to guess that it's aftermarket. April 23, 200321 yr Author comment_34911 Thats what I figured I looked for Hitachi everywhere but all I found is"made in Japan" and no brand name. The fact it said made in Japan drove my curiosity. April 23, 200321 yr comment_34912 Perhaps, but remember that in the 60's and 70's "Made in Japan" was equivalent to today's "Made in China", "Made in Taiwan", etc. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/5805-is-this-an-original-factory-am-fm-stereo-8-track-for-73240z/#findComment-34912 Share on other sites
April 23, 200321 yr comment_34920 Actually, P/N 29220-E4125 or 29400-E8725 were for an 8 track stereo radio as a factory installed option (with TWO speakers even). The microfiche doesn't show a good detail of the face, but from the fact that the one you have does NOT have an antenna switch on the upper right, I would say it's more than likely an aftermarket one.The antenna on the 240 was a manually operated electric antenna. i.e. you had to push the button in one direction or the other to get it to work. A Fully Automatic Antenna detects the radio being turned on and off and actuates accordingly.FWIWEnrique Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/5805-is-this-an-original-factory-am-fm-stereo-8-track-for-73240z/#findComment-34920 Share on other sites
April 23, 200321 yr Author comment_34923 So that would explain the aftermarket switch in the center counsole. And the aftermarket antenna. So it is an old time aftermarket.Thanxz you guys! April 23, 200321 yr comment_34941 Sorry bud. I have a 73 240 and the radio looks nothing like that. I don't have the 8 track, never heard of that option, but I would assume it would some what resemble the plain radio in styling.
