I purchased a 74 Datsun 260z recently and when I went to go check it out it was running after jump starting it, I couldn't really take it out for a test drive due to the fact that the previous owner had switched the dash board and could never get it back up, after I towed it home that night I couldn't get it to start up, only the head lights and tail lights would light up, the following day I had no response whatsoever his time not even the lights would turn on, so I took the battery to auto zone hoping maybe charging it would help but they couldn't pick up a signal on the charger so couldn't charge it, they suggested I get a new battery but luckily a friend off mine had a spare, after charging that one we went ahead and set it up and the car and this time I had no response again only the box I circled began to spark and smoke, I'm not sure exactly why but any time I have tried that always seems to happen so if any one can help me determine what the issue could be I'd greatly appreciateScreenshot_2017-08-05-20-20-42.png it.

shorted alternator maybe. the box you are pointing at is the fuse link box. there are two fuse links that should be in there. they are a special made wire with spade connectors. You need to get the correct replacements and find out what is shorted.

First get replacement fusible links. I would suggest having backup links as well.

You need Nissan part numbers 24161-A0100 and 24161-28500. You should be able to give those numbers to the parts department at Gwinnett Place Nissan or Stone Mountain Nissan. If neither dealership will help you, you could order them from http://www.courtesyparts.com. In a pinch, you can get the black and green links from http://www.zcarparts.com or http://www.zcardepot.com, but you will pay more.

After you get the replacement fusible links, don't install them. Find the addresses for the best BBQ and best Mexican food places near you. Invite me over to assess what's going on with your electrical system and take me to lunch afterward. Oh, and have a 6 pack of Diet Dew bottles on hand. Don't get the regular stuff. I only drink diet. 

I can pencil you in for the weekend of the 19th. That should give you enough time to get the fusible links and have a fully charged battery. I'll show up with the proper diagnostic equipment, and I will probably be able to get your car running or give you a pretty good idea of why it won't run. By the way, I like to get off to an early start so I can be done before the heat of the day.

I think someone rearranged the wiring on that 260z. The fusible links should of been on the firewall. That white plastic thing and the "emergency" switch should of been where the fusible link holder is now.

That's not all. If you notice, the main wiring harness is wrapped in a split loom. That makes me think someone has "worked" on it. I think some components were re-arranged in the engine bay when the "late" 260Zs were produced.

Things like this are why I like to put my hands (and test equipment) on a car rather than guess online.

And then a buddy off mine who actually knows some what about cars helped me assemble these but that didn't make a difference. 20170810_190852.jpeg
